Santa Clarita had 228,673 residents in the 2020 Census, more than any other city in Los Angeles County except Los Angeles and Long Beach. Yet when you look up a Santa Clarita case in the court's filing locator, no courthouse inside the valley comes back. Civil, family, eviction and small claims cases are filed at the Chatsworth Courthouse instead. Probate goes downtown.
We serve legal papers at Santa Clarita homes, offices and workplaces, and we file the case for you at Chatsworth or Stanley Mosk. Every job runs out of our Sacramento office, the only one we have. Open a Service Request with the PDFs, or send them to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com.
Chatsworth is the filing court
The Los Angeles Superior Court publishes a filing court locator. You enter a community or ZIP Code, and it names a courthouse for each case type. Our Santa Clarita search on October 28, 2026 returned this:
| Case type | Courthouse the locator returns | Address |
|---|---|---|
| Unlimited civil (over $35,000) | Chatsworth Courthouse | 9425 Penfield Ave., Chatsworth 91311 |
| Family law and restraining orders | Chatsworth Courthouse | 9425 Penfield Ave., Chatsworth 91311 |
| Limited civil, collection | Chatsworth Courthouse | 9425 Penfield Ave., Chatsworth 91311 |
| Unlawful detainer | Chatsworth Courthouse | 9425 Penfield Ave., Chatsworth 91311 |
| Small claims | Chatsworth Courthouse | 9425 Penfield Ave., Chatsworth 91311 |
| Limited civil, non-collection | Stanley Mosk Courthouse | 111 North Hill Street, Los Angeles 90012 |
| Probate | Stanley Mosk Courthouse | 111 North Hill Street, Los Angeles 90012 |
Chatsworth's directory entry lists Civil, Family Law, Small Claims, Traffic and Unlawful Detainer. The courthouse opens at 8:00 a.m. The Clerk's Office takes filings from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except court holidays. Public parking is at the end of the cul-de-sac on Penfield Ave. Source: the court's courthouse directory, checked October 2026.
The Santa Clarita Courthouse on Valencia Boulevard
The valley does have a courthouse: the Santa Clarita Courthouse, 23747 West Valencia Blvd. The court's directory lists only criminal and traffic divisions there, with a Criminal Clerk's Office, a Traffic Clerk's Office and a lot entered from Valencia Blvd. Local Rule 2.2 places it in the North Valley District, alongside the San Fernando and Chatsworth courthouses. A civil summons or an eviction complaint won't name the Valencia building. A traffic citation or a misdemeanor case may.
Valencia, Newhall, Canyon Country and Saugus get the same answer
An address here may carry a community name instead of the city. The locator treats them alike. We also ran Valencia, Newhall, Canyon Country and Saugus, and each returned the same courthouses as Santa Clarita.
The ZIP Codes the locator lists for each community overlap:
- Valencia: 91354, 91355 and 91385
- Newhall: 91321, 91322, 91381 and 91382
- Canyon Country: 91321, 91351, 91386, 91387 and 91390
- Saugus: 91350 and 91390
The Census Bureau ties seven ZIP Code areas to the city itself: 91321, 91350, 91351, 91354, 91355, 91387 and 91390. The locator's list for Santa Clarita runs wider, adding 91310, 91322 and 91380 through 91386. Some of those reach past the city line. In our Census data, 91381 belongs to Stevenson Ranch and 91384 to Castaic, both outside the city.
Castaic addresses can split
On October 29, 2026, we ran Stevenson Ranch (91381) and Castaic (91384) through the locator. Stevenson Ranch, and the Pico community the locator also lists under 91381, matched Santa Clarita line for line.
Castaic didn't. Under the community names Castaic, Castaic Junction and Frenchman's Flat, small claims and limited eviction cases go to the Michael Antonovich Antelope Valley Courthouse in Lancaster. Under Oak Flat, Val Verde Park and Santa Clarita, the same ZIP Code returns Chatsworth for both. All other case types matched.
So a Castaic landlord should pin down the community name for the property before filing, and the tenant's summons may name Lancaster rather than Chatsworth.
Chatsworth's one counter
At Chatsworth, the directory sends nearly every filer to Room 1200 on the 1st floor: unlimited civil other than personal injury, civil collections, restraining orders, family law, small claims and limited evictions. Eviction cases follow a set schedule there. Motions are heard Monday and Wednesday at 8:30 a.m., and ex parte applications Monday through Friday at 8:30 a.m., filed between 8:15 and 8:30 that morning. Motions in the limited collections hub, Dept F43, are booked through the court's online Court Reservation System.
Probate and smaller non-collection cases go downtown
Two case types skip Chatsworth. Probate, and limited civil cases that aren't about collection, go to the Stanley Mosk Courthouse at 111 North Hill Street in downtown Los Angeles. A limited case asks for $35,000 or less.
Stanley Mosk opens at 7:30 a.m., and its Clerk's Office runs 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The court is changing department numbers at several courthouses beginning November 2, 2026. Stanley Mosk's directory already prints both, as in Dept 215, formerly Dept 2. If your notice was issued before the change, give us both numbers if you have them.
Papers to serve in Santa Clarita?
What the locator does not decide
Treat the locator's answer as a starting point. The tool states that sitting within a district's area doesn't by itself require assignment there. Chapter 2 of the Local Rules holds the actual criteria for where a case is filed and heard.
The tool also flags caseload adjustments in the San Fernando Valley, East Los Angeles and the North Central District. Those adjustments can move a case to another courthouse, and the court tells filers to check with the Clerk's Office. For a Santa Clarita case headed to Chatsworth, it's worth a call before a counter filing.
Serving across the Santa Clarita Valley
The city is only part of the valley. Several of its neighbors sit outside the city limits, and a few are some distance out:
| Place | Status | Miles from Santa Clarita |
|---|---|---|
| Canyon Country | community inside the city | 1.4 |
| Newhall | community inside the city | 2.9 |
| Stevenson Ranch | census-designated place, 20,178 residents in 2020 | 5.4 |
| Valencia | community, no separate Census count | 6.9 |
| Castaic | census-designated place, 18,937 residents in 2020 | 8.7 |
| San Fernando | incorporated city, 23,946 residents in 2020 | 9.3 |
Distances are straight-line from our Census data. For canyon and hillside addresses past the city edge, such as those around Castaic, remote areas are subject to different timelines. Call 855-582-5776 before you choose Rush for one of those.
To give the server a good first attempt, put these in the Letter of Instruction:
- The community name as well as the city, since a Valencia or Saugus address may be written either way.
- Gate and access details. A gate code, a guard booth instruction or the name of a property manager.
- Commute patterns. If the person commutes, the hour they leave and return can decide when the server goes.
- A work address. If the person works in the valley, that's a strong second location.
- Past attempts. Who answered the door and what they said.
Family law papers in Santa Clarita
Divorce, custody and restraining order cases for Santa Clarita go to Chatsworth. A family law summons is usually proved on form FL-115. Tell us whether the papers include a hearing date, so the attempts can be planned to finish well before it.
Family papers often go to someone the client knows well. That helps. A recent photo, the other party's work schedule and any second address can all go in the Letter of Instruction. Keep any safety concern in the instructions too, such as a protective order already in place, so the server can plan the approach.
Businesses in the valley
To serve a corporation or LLC with a Santa Clarita address, start with its agent for service of process. California requires corporations and LLCs to name one in their state filings (Corporations Code §§ 1502 and 17701.13). Look the company up on the Secretary of State's bizfile Online search. Send us the agent's name and address with the papers.
If the agent can't be located, CCP § 416.10 allows delivery to listed officers, such as the president or a general manager. Our serving corporations guide covers the lookup and every fallback.
Filing at Chatsworth and serving from one request
The court's civil e-filing FAQ requires attorneys to e-file in Los Angeles civil cases. The exception is a court-granted exemption, requested on forms EFS-007 and EFS-008. Self-represented parties may still file on paper. We file at the counter or by eFiling, then send the papers out for service once the summons issues.
One rule changes in 2027. Diligence before substituted service will be shown by attempts on at least three occasions, on three different days at three different times (CCP § 415.20(b)(2)). Our AB 747 guide covers the rest. Our Los Angeles County court filing page explains counters and eFiling. Our post on statewide California service of process covers how the rules apply across counties.
What if the person has moved?
An address taken from an older case or an old lease may be stale. Skip tracing searches for a current one, and you approve it before the next attempt. Every update comes in the same email thread. Our post on how to find a defendant in California explains what to gather first.
