Porterville is a south Tulare County city with its own full-service courthouse. Valpro Attorney Services serves papers there on people and businesses: summonses and complaints, small claims claims, family law petitions and orders, subpoenas, eviction notices and unlawful detainer packets. We also file Porterville cases with Tulare County Superior Court and pull copies from its files.

Porterville sits about 222 miles straight-line south of our Sacramento office. Send a Service Request online with up to 5 PDFs, or email the papers to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com. To talk through a hearing date first, call 855-582-5776.

The South County Justice Center on Olive Avenue

The courthouse is at 300 E. Olive Ave., Porterville, CA 93257, phone 559-782-3700, about 1.4 miles from the city's Census center point. The court's location page lists building hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and says the outside windows are open during those hours for limited services.

That page lists these case types at the building: CARE Court, civil, criminal, domestic violence, family law, restraining orders and traffic. The civil, small claims, family law and probate division pages each name the "South County Justice Center, Civil Legal Filings" as one of two filing contacts. The other is Room 201 at the County Civic Center in Visalia, about 24 miles northwest.

For most Porterville matters, that means the papers can be filed and heard in town. A self-help center is on site too, open in person Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Friday until noon.

Which counter takes a Porterville filing

The local rules and division pages split the work like this:

MatterWhere it goes
CivilCivil Legal Filings at 300 E. Olive Ave., or Room 201 in Visalia
Small claimsEither Civil Legal Filings counter
Family law initial pleadingsVisalia or Porterville, under Local Rule 934(a)
Probate ex parte appointmentsRoom 201 or the South County civil clerk (Local Rule 1003)
Adoption hearingsSet by Room 201 or the South County civil clerk (Local Rule 1063)
Dependency and delinquency papersJuvenile Justice Center, 11200 Avenue 368, Visalia (Local Rule 1102)

Filing on paper isn't the only route. The court accepts eFiling through approved providers in civil, family, probate and small claims cases, and its FAQ says no case type requires it yet. We handle both. See Tulare County court filing for how a filing reaches us.

Keeping a civil case in south county

A civil case can start at either counter. Under Local Rule 600(a)(1), the clerk sets the first case management conference no less than 120 days after the complaint is filed, and the plaintiff must serve the Notice of CMC on each defendant along with the summons and complaint. Leave that notice out of the packet and the defendant hasn't received everything the rule calls for.

If the parties would rather have the case heard in Porterville, Local Rule 600(a)(8) gives a path. When all parties present a written stipulation to the clerk at least 15 days before the CMC, the case is assigned for all purposes to the South County Justice Center. After that deadline, a transfer request is up to the assigned judge.

Send us the Notice of CMC with the rest of the documents, and we'll serve the full set together.

Family law, child support and juvenile matters

Family law work in Porterville has a few local twists worth knowing before you file or serve.

  • Short-notice hearings. Local Rule 907 sends requests for an emergency hearing to Room 201 in Visalia or the counter clerk at the South County Justice Center, depending on where the case was already filed.
  • Default envelopes. Local Rule 924 says envelopes the clerk mails to a party in default in a dissolution must carry the clerk's return address, not the moving party's. For a Porterville case, that's Clerk of the Superior Court, 300 E. Olive Avenue, Porterville, CA 93257, with the case number.
  • Facilitator help. Local Rule 930(c) places a Family Law Facilitator office in the Self Help Resource Center at the South County Justice Center. The number is 559-737-5500.
  • Child support. The court's family law page says DCSS matters are heard at the South County Justice Center on Tuesdays and in Dinuba on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Porterville filings for those cases go to the courthouse on Fridays.
  • Juvenile. Hearings happen in Visalia and Porterville, but the papers are filed at the Juvenile Justice Center in Visalia. The juvenile clerk's line is (559) 738-2300.

A divorce petition, a request for order or a custody filing still has to be served on the other parent, and we can do that anywhere in the county.

Papers to serve in Porterville?

Getting copies of a P case file

Tulare County case numbers carry a letter for the courthouse that holds the file. The court's records page sends mail requests for case numbers beginning with V to Visalia and those beginning with P to the South County Justice Center, Attn: Civil/Criminal Records.

What the page lists for copies:

  • Fees. 50 cents per page per side for plain copies. A certified document is $40 plus copies, and a certified divorce decree is $15.
  • Timing. Mail and online requests are processed within 15 business days after the request and payment arrive.
  • Online. The request card needs the case number and an email address. Staff reply in 24 to 48 hours and can book an in-person appointment.
  • No case number. Search the public Case Index yourself, or pay $15 for a clerk search that runs longer than 10 minutes per name.

The court also runs a Virtual Public Counter for live video help with records and payments. If you need the papers sooner than 15 business days, put the case number on a request for document retrieval.

Appearing by Zoom

The court's remote hearings page says parties may appear by video or phone through Zoom. Request remote access no more than one week before the hearing, and expect a reply within 24 hours. Requests made inside 24 hours are handled as the court can.

The request form isn't the whole job. You must also give notice to the court and everyone entitled to it under California Rule of Court 3.672 and Code of Civil Procedure § 367.75. The page sets a naming format for the Zoom screen, such as "J. Doe Retained Counsel" for private attorneys, and bars recording without prior consent. Local Rule 937 adds its own terms for family law and domestic violence cases.

Eviction papers in Porterville

A Porterville landlord files the unlawful detainer at either Civil Legal Filings counter. The court's landlord-tenant page notes that a tenant who is served should look at the complaint for the court location where the response goes.

The answer clock depends on how the summons was delivered. When the papers are handed to the tenant, the tenant has 10 court days to answer, not counting weekends or court holidays. After substituted service or posting, it's 10 calendar days plus 10 court days after the mailing. Posting an eviction summons falls under CCP § 415.45.

We serve the notice, then the summons and complaint, at the unit. Send the unit number, the names of every adult you expect there, and any gate or access notes.

Addresses that share the 93257 ZIP Code

Porterville's ZIP Code area is far larger than the city. Census figures put the 93257 area at about 379 square miles of land, and only about 19 of them are inside city limits. The same ZIP covers four unincorporated Census places: East Porterville, Poplar-Cotton Center, Woodville and Woodville Farm Labor Camp.

That matters when you write the Letter of Instruction. A "Porterville" address can be a city lot, a county road in Poplar or a ranch house miles out. Give the full street address, the nearest cross road and the best hours.

Foothill and mountain addresses

Tulare County climbs east of Porterville. California Hot Springs is about 24 miles away in a straight line, and Posey about 27. Those addresses take longer to reach than a house on the valley floor, and remote areas are subject to different timelines. If your hearing is close, call 855-582-5776 before you pick Rush for one of them.

The Kern County line is close on the south side. Delano is about 24 miles from the Porterville courthouse, and its cases belong to Kern County Superior Court, not Tulare.

What to put on a Porterville Service Request

  • Papers: up to 5 PDFs. For a civil case, add the Notice of CMC.
  • Who: the person's full legal name, or the exact entity name for a business.
  • Where: every address, with unit numbers, plus a workplace if you have one.
  • Letter of Instruction: hearing date, a photo or description, vehicles, best hours and any access notes.
  • Speed: Rush or Standard, plus your Billing Reference.

Each request gets a confirmation email, and every update comes in that thread.

Serving a company with a Porterville location

Can a civil case filed in Visalia be moved to the Porterville courthouse?

Yes, if every party agrees in writing. Tulare County Local Rule 600(a)(8) says a case is assigned for all purposes to the South County Justice Center when all parties present a written stipulation to the clerk at least 15 days before the case management conference. A request made after that deadline is up to the assigned judge. Source: Tulare County Superior Court Local Rules effective July 1, 2026, checked Oct 2026.

Where do I mail a copy request for a Porterville case?

Case numbers that begin with a P belong to the South County Justice Center. Mail the request to 300 E. Olive Avenue, Porterville, CA 93257, Attn: Civil/Criminal Records, with the case number, payment and a self-addressed stamped envelope. The court's records page says mailed requests take 15 workdays from receipt of the request and payment. Source: tulare.courts.ca.gov, checked Oct 2026.

Can I drop off child support paperwork at the Porterville DCSS office?

You can, but it won't be filed that day. The court's family law page says papers left at the Porterville DCSS office, 259 N. Main St., are couriered to the Clerk of Court as a courtesy and filed on receipt if appropriate. To file in Porterville the same day, use the South County Justice Center, which takes DCSS filings on Fridays. Source: tulare.courts.ca.gov, checked Oct 2026.

Are juvenile papers from Porterville filed at the South County Justice Center?

No. Hearings can be held there, but Local Rule 1102 says all papers in dependency (Welfare and Institutions Code § 300) and delinquency (§ 602) proceedings are filed and kept at the Juvenile Justice Center clerk's office, 11200 Avenue 368, Visalia. Source: Tulare County Superior Court Local Rules effective July 1, 2026, checked Oct 2026.

How early can I ask to appear by Zoom in a Porterville hearing?

No more than one week ahead. The court's remote hearings page says requests made earlier than that shouldn't be sent, and a response usually comes within 24 hours. You still have to give notice to the court and the other parties under Rule of Court 3.672 and CCP § 367.75. Source: tulare.courts.ca.gov, checked Oct 2026.

Do you serve in East Porterville and Woodville?

Yes. Both are unincorporated Census places inside the 93257 ZIP Code area, so they share a mailing ZIP with the city but sit outside its limits. Give us the street address, any cross street and the best hours. The case still belongs to Tulare County Superior Court either way.

Ready when you are.
