Yuba County sits on the east side of the Feather River, across from Yuba City and Sutter County, and climbs from the valley floor into the Sierra foothills. The 2020 Census counted 81,575 residents. Only two places are incorporated: Marysville, the county seat, with 12,844 residents, and Wheatland, with 3,712. Most residents live outside the two cities, in unincorporated communities such as Linda, Olivehurst and Plumas Lake south of Marysville.

Yuba is one of the nearest counties to our Sacramento office, about 38 miles to Marysville. We take Yuba County process serving and court filing there. Send the documents on a Service Request or email them to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com.

The Fifth Street courthouse

Yuba Superior Court works out of a single building, the Yuba County Courthouse at 215 Fifth Street, Suite 200, Marysville. The court lists no other location, so civil, small claims, unlawful detainer, family law, probate, criminal, juvenile and traffic matters all come here.

Hours depend on which page you read. The court's location page lists 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, while the Civil Division and local rules pages give office hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Phones are answered from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Parking near the courthouse is limited to two hours and enforced by Marysville police. The court points to a free longer-term municipal lot one block south, at Fourth and C Streets.

Civil calendar. The Civil Division FAQ says the civil law and motion calendar runs at 10:00 a.m. on Mondays, moving to Tuesday when Monday is a holiday, and each moving paper carries a court reporter fee. Long cause court trials and jury trials start on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. Ex parte hearings are arranged through the judges' secretary.

Unlawful detainers under Local Rule 3.1

Yuba has its own eviction rule. Under Local Rule 3.1, the plaintiff must attach the written rental or lease agreement, if any, and every statutory notice served on the tenant as exhibits to the complaint. When a request for entry of default doesn't show full compliance with the notice and service rules, the clerk rejects it and sets the matter for hearing.

That makes the proof of service of the notice as important as the summons. The tenant's answer is due 10 court days after personal service of the summons. General information, not legal advice.

Mandatory e-filing since 2018

Yuba was early to require e-filing. Its Electronic Filing Requirements state that since July 1, 2018, documents in civil cases (complex, unlimited, limited and small claims), probate, family law and juvenile dependency must be filed and served electronically. Local Rule chapter 9 carries the same mandate. Self-represented parties and non-parties are exempt. An attorney may ask to be excused by showing undue hardship or significant prejudice, using Judicial Council forms EFS-007 and EFS-008; an inability to pay e-filing fees doesn't count.

The requirements document sets the technical rules:

  • PDFs must be text-searchable, at least 300 dpi, and not password protected.
  • Editable versions of proposed orders go by email to the civil, family or juvenile division address.
  • Bonds, undertakings, wills and codicils, sealed documents, trial exhibits and deposits can't be e-filed.

Filings go through Odyssey eFileCA. A document counts as filed only when the clerk accepts it, and one submitted on a court day before midnight takes that day's date.

Yuba also accepts fax filing, both directly and through a fax filing agency, under Local Rule 2.5. The fee is $20 plus 50 cents per page, due no later than the next business day.

Our Yuba County court filing service files electronically or at the Fifth Street counter. The Court Filings page lists what to send, and our post on court filing service in California gives more background. General information, not legal advice.

Papers to serve in Yuba County?

Valley neighborhoods, Beale and the foothills

Marysville sits where the Yuba River meets the Feather. South along State Route 70, Linda, Olivehurst and Plumas Lake line the highway, and Wheatland lies farther south near the Placer County line.

Beale Air Force Base occupies a large area east of Marysville and Wheatland. Base addresses come with access rules, so tell us in your Letter of Instruction if the person lives or works on base.

East of the valley, State Route 20 and county roads lead to Browns Valley, Loma Rica, Smartsville, Oregon House, Dobbins, Brownsville, Challenge and Camptonville. Homes there can sit well off paved roads. Remote areas are subject to different timelines. Give the physical location, gate details and a workplace if you know one.

Marysville and Yuba City face each other across the river, so a defendant's home and workplace can be in different counties. If your defendant may be in Yuba City, see the Sutter County hub. When neither address works, skip tracing can look for a current one.

The Sheriff's Civil Department

The Yuba County Sheriff's Civil Department is in the courthouse itself, at 215 Fifth Street, Suite 150, with mail to P.O. Box 1389, Marysville. It's open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, closed for lunch from noon to 1:00 p.m. A request needs a letter of instructions with the name of the person to serve and the address for service, plus a front-and-back copy of the documents for each person. The office mails a proof of service, or a certificate of non-service when it can't complete service.

Any adult who is at least 18 and not a party may also serve a summons. See who can serve papers in California and the proof of service guide. From January 1, 2027, AB 747 says three good-faith attempts on 3 different days at 3 different times show reasonable diligence for substituted service (CCP § 415.20(b)(2)), and clerks' registers of process servers become public (Bus. & Prof. Code § 22355). Read the AB 747 guide. General information, not legal advice.
