Tracy sits in the southwest corner of San Joaquin County, about 61 miles straight-line from our office at 1520 W El Camino Ave #125, Sacramento, CA 95833. It had 93,000 residents in the 2020 Census, and the Census Bureau puts it at 101,901 as of July 1, 2025. Valpro Attorney Services serves summonses, complaints, eviction papers, subpoenas, small claims and family law papers at Tracy addresses, on people and on businesses.

Tracy has no courthouse, so every filing goes to another city, and which one depends on the case type.

Where a Tracy case is filed

San Joaquin County Superior Court lists four locations on its home page: Stockton, Lodi, Manteca and the Juvenile Justice Center in French Camp. None is in Tracy. Here's how the court's own department pages sort the work a Tracy filer usually brings:

Tracy matterWhere the court lists itClerk line

Civil harassment orderStockton (2nd floor clerk), Lodi Department L-1 or the Manteca BranchManteca (209) 239-9188

From central Tracy, Manteca is about 13 miles straight-line, Stockton about 19 and Lodi about 29. Clerk's offices and drop boxes at each location keep 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. weekday hours. Source: sjcourts.org, checked October 2026.

Manteca is the closest building, but it isn't a full-service courthouse. Its page lists criminal, traffic, civil harassment and unlawful detainer only. A Tracy contract dispute or a personal injury complaint still goes to the Civil Department in Stockton.

The notice that has to ride along with a Tracy summons

San Joaquin assigns each civil case to one judicial officer when it's filed. Under Local Rule 3-101, the clerk issues a Notice of Case Assignment and Notice of Hearing that names the judge and the department. The court's civil page is direct about it: a copy of that notice must be served on every named defendant together with the summons, the complaint and the court's Alternative Dispute Resolution information.

For a Tracy civil case, upload:

  1. The issued summons.
  2. The complaint, with exhibits.
  3. The Notice of Case Assignment and Notice of Hearing.
  4. The ADR information package.
  5. Any other papers the court ordered served in that case.

The Service Request takes up to 5 PDFs, so combine files if the packet runs longer. The proof of service lists what was served, and a missing document is easier to fix before the first attempt.

Filing for Tracy cases: App File, the counter or the drop box

San Joaquin runs App File, its own e-filing portal, with payments handled by nCourt. It lists civil, criminal, family law, probate and small claims as supported types, and warns that a technical or payment problem could force another filing method.

Evictions are the exception. Since January 3, 2022, the court has taken new unlawful detainer complaints only at the clerk's window or through the civil drop box, and it says they're processed within 24 hours. The eviction page tells filers to watch appfile.sjcourts.org for news that UD e-filing has opened.

The civil page also posts a weekly processing table, updated every Friday. When we checked in October 2026, it showed new limited civil complaints processed within a week, e-filings at early October and clerk default judgments at late July. Read that table before you promise a client a date on a default. Our San Joaquin County court filing page covers how we handle counter and portal filings.

Tracy rentals and the eviction calendar

A Tracy landlord or property manager files the unlawful detainer, gets endorsed copies and an original summons back, and then has to have the tenant served. The court's eviction page says the summons and complaint must be served by someone over 18 who isn't a party, and that the server completes a proof of service for filing. You can't serve your own tenant.

A few points from the same page are easy to miss:

  • Default paperwork isn't a counter job. Requests for a clerk's default judgment for possession are left with the clerk for processing. Ask the branch where you filed when to pick them up.
  • Addresses have to match. If the tenant answers, you file the original proof of service with a Memorandum to Set Case for Trial, and the address on the proof of service must match the address on the answer.

On a Tracy eviction request, include the unit, building or space number and any gate instructions, so the proof of service matches the address on the complaint.

Over the Altamont: when the other side lives or works outside San Joaquin

Tracy sits close to the Alameda County line. Livermore, on the other side of the Altamont Pass, is about 17 miles straight-line. Knightsen, about 19.5 miles north, is in Contra Costa County. That produces two situations we see in Tracy requests.

A Tracy resident sued in another county's court. The case stays in the court where it was filed. A summons issued in Alameda or Contra Costa County is served at the Tracy address the same way a San Joaquin summons is, and the proof of service goes back to the issuing court.

A Tracy case against someone who works elsewhere. A workplace across the county line is a fair second address. Put both on one Service Request with the hours you know.

Venue is your or your attorney's call. Service follows the person, not the county line.

Tracy ZIP Code areas reach well past the city

Three Census ZIP Code areas overlap Tracy: 95304, 95376 and 95377. They don't match the city limits. The Census Bureau's 2020 relationship file shows:

  • 95376 lies almost entirely inside the city, with about 94% of its land in Tracy.
  • 95377 is mostly outside it. Only about 12% of its land falls inside the city limits.
  • 95304 is the largest by far, and only about 3% of its land is in Tracy. A small piece reaches into Lathrop.

So a Tracy mailing address can sit on unincorporated county land or a rural road miles from town. The court doesn't change, but the attempt plan does: add cross streets or a map pin to the Letter of Instruction. ZIP Code areas are Census approximations of postal ZIP Codes.

Small claims for a Tracy dispute

San Joaquin's small claims page sets the limit at $12,500, and lawyers don't represent the parties at the hearing. The claim has to be delivered by someone who isn't a party to the case, and the server's proof of service then goes to the court. Two court programs can resolve a Tracy claim without a judge deciding it:

  • Small Claims Online Dispute Resolution, linked from the court's small claims page.
  • Same-day, in-court mediation, which the court says may be available in small claims, civil harassment and eviction cases. Dispute Resolution Services of the San Joaquin County Bar Foundation provides it; call (209) 474-8794 for details.

If mediation doesn't settle it, plan to be there. Small claims and eviction hearings in San Joaquin are in person unless the judge gives written approval for a remote appearance.

What a Tracy request needs from you

Send the full packet, the exact party name (for a business, its agent for service of process from bizfile Online; see serving corporations), every address with unit numbers, the hours and vehicle you know about, and your deadline. You'll get a confirmation email, and every update comes in that thread. If an address fails, skip tracing looks for a current one. We make no guarantees for service.

From January 1, 2027, diligence before substituted service will be shown by attempting personal delivery on at least 3 occasions, on 3 different days at 3 different times (CCP § 415.20(b)(2)). See our 2027 service of process guide. This is general information, not legal advice.

Tracy process server questions

Not listed here? Call 855-582-5776 during business hours, Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.

Is there a courthouse in Tracy?

No. San Joaquin County Superior Court lists four locations: the Stockton Courthouse, the Lodi Courthouse, the Manteca Branch and the Juvenile Justice Center in French Camp. A Tracy case is filed at one of those. The Manteca Branch, about 13 miles away, is the closest. Source: sjcourts.org, checked October 2026.

Can a Tracy landlord file an eviction in Manteca instead of Stockton?

The Manteca Branch at 315 E. Center Street lists unlawful detainer among its case types, with a landlord-tenant line at (209) 239-9188. The court's eviction page also lists the Civil Department on the 2nd floor of the Stockton Courthouse. Call the branch before you drive to confirm it will take your filing. Source: sjcourts.org, checked October 2026.

What has to be served along with a Tracy summons and complaint?

In a civil case, the clerk issues a Notice of Case Assignment naming the judge assigned for all purposes under Local Rule 3-101. The court's civil page says a copy must be served on every named defendant with the summons, the complaint and the court's ADR information. Upload all of it with your Service Request. Source: sjcourts.org civil page, checked October 2026.

The defendant lives in Tracy but the case is in Alameda County. Can you still serve?

Yes. The case stays in the court where it was filed, and the papers are served where the person can be found. A summons from an Alameda County, Contra Costa County or any other California court can be served at a Tracy address. Send the papers from that court and the Tracy address, and we return the proof of service for you to file there.

Do I have to appear in person for a Tracy small claims or eviction hearing?

Usually, yes. San Joaquin's small claims and eviction pages say parties must appear in person unless the judge who will hear the matter gives written approval to appear remotely. The request is made on form RA-010, with proposed order RA-020, at least 5 court days before the hearing. Source: sjcourts.org, checked October 2026.

Can I e-file my Tracy case?

Most types, yes, through the court's own App File portal, which lists civil, family law, probate and small claims filings. Eviction complaints are the exception and still go to the clerk or the drop box. We can file for you either way.

Ready when you are.
