Where Forestville cases are filed

Forestville has no courthouse, and the Superior Court of California, County of Sonoma keeps all of its locations in Santa Rosa. For the civil and family matters we handle, one building takes almost everything: the Civil and Family Law Courthouse at 3055 Cleveland Avenue, about 9 miles east of central Forestville in a straight line.

The court's location page lists the clerk's office at 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and the building at 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. The entrance is at the west end of the building, facing the parking lot. Criminal, traffic and juvenile matters go to other Santa Rosa buildings, including the Hall of Justice at 625 Administration Drive.

Our Sonoma County court filing service can take a Forestville filing in for you, on paper or electronically.

A rural ZIP Code area

Forestville's ZIP Code area is far bigger than the community. The Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file measures 95436 at about 21 square miles of land, all in Sonoma County:

Part of 95436Land areaShare
Forestville CDPabout 5.3 sq miabout 25%
Windsor (town)about 0.16 sq miunder 1%
Guerneville CDPa sliverunder 1%
Outside any town or Census placeabout 15.8 sq miabout 74%

The Forestville CDP lies entirely within 95436. So a "Forestville, CA 95436" address may be a house near the center of the community, or a property on a county road well outside it. The court doesn't change. The service plan does: remote areas are subject to different timelines, and a rural address without clear directions can cost an attempt.

Road conditions matter here too. A June 2024 update from the county's District 5 supervisor reported a Highway 116 closure in Forestville. When a closure or detour is posted, it can change how long a trip to a far address takes, so build that into a tight deadline. ZIP Code areas are Census approximations of postal ZIP Codes.

What to put in a Forestville Letter of Instruction

For a western Sonoma County address, the details you send before the first attempt save the most time:

  1. Directions past the street number. The road, a landmark, the name on the mailbox, or a pin on a map.
  2. Access. A locked gate, a long private driveway, a shared road, or dogs on the property.
  3. Which building. A main house and a cabin or second unit on the same parcel, and which one the person uses.
  4. Timing. Seasonal or weekend residence, work shifts, or the days someone is reliably there.
  5. A second place to try. A workplace in Santa Rosa, Sebastopol or elsewhere, or another regular stop.
  6. Someone with a key. A property manager or caretaker who can open a gate or confirm who lives in which unit.

Then choose Rush or Standard. For a far address, call us before choosing Rush so we can talk through timing. Get each update by email.

Sheriff or private server

The Sheriff is one way to have papers served in Sonoma County. The Sheriff's Civil Bureau page shows what that route involves:

  • No rush service. Documents are processed in the order received, and the page asks requesters to allow lead time for processing and attempts.
  • Mandatory instructions. Judicial Council form SER-001, and SER-001A where it applies, is required for all services except wage garnishments and other levies. Incorrect or incomplete paperwork is sent back for correction.
  • Fees up front. Fees are paid in advance and are owed whether or not service succeeds, citing Government Code sections 26736 and 26738.
  • Printing charge. Since January 1, 2026, documents submitted electronically that the Sheriff has to print cost $1.25 a page, under Government Code section 26727.

The bureau is at 2796 Ventura Avenue, Santa Rosa, phone (707) 565-2751, open weekdays 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with the document window open until 4:30 p.m. It accepts credit cards in person only, with a 2.95% fee.

A private process server is the other route. Any adult who isn't a party to the case can serve most papers, as our guide to who can serve papers in California explains. That can matter when a hearing date is close or the person is hard to catch at home.

Papers to serve in Forestville?

E-filing a Forestville case

Under Local Rule 17.22, effective January 1, 2023, every represented party in a Sonoma County civil, probate or family law case, including child support agency matters, has to e-file. Criminal and juvenile matters were added on January 1, 2026. Self-represented parties are exempt, and e-filing fees are waived for anyone who shows they can't pay court fees.

Four points from the court's e-filing page come up on Forestville cases:

  1. The 5:00 p.m. exception. E-filings are timely until 11:59 p.m. on the due date, but a document that has to be served the same day must be filed by 5:00 p.m.
  2. Sealed cases stay on paper. A case the court has ordered sealed can't be e-filed; its papers go to the courthouse. Unlawful detainer cases are the exception and can be e-filed.
  3. Original signatures. Documents that need original signatures can be picked up at the clerk's office or mailed for an added cost.
  4. Endorsed copies. Accepted filings come back through your electronic filing service provider.

The court also offers voluntary e-service between parties through a pre-approved stipulation and order, form CV-42. That covers later papers between parties who agree to it. The summons and complaint still have to be served the usual way.

Help from the Civil Self-Help Center

The court's Civil Self-Help Center, at the same Cleveland Avenue courthouse, sees walk-ins Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to noon; visitors take a ticket from the kiosk before 11:00 a.m. Walk-in help covers civil harassment and elder abuse restraining orders, eviction answers for residential tenants, debt collection answers and rescheduling a court date. Small claims, name changes and other eviction questions are by appointment, through voicemail at 707-521-6534 or email at selfhelp@sonomacourt.org, and the center says calls and emails are generally returned within 72 hours.

The center's page also lists what it doesn't do. That includes discovery, appeals, case management statements and serving your legal documents for you. It doesn't handle family law or probate; those go to the Family Law Facilitator and Self-Help Center. The small claims advisor service under CCP §§ 116.260 and 116.940 runs through the Civil Self-Help Center as well.

Evictions and small claims

A Forestville eviction is filed with the Civil Clerk's Office. Once the summons is issued, serve it promptly: after personal service, a tenant has 10 court days to respond, according to the California Courts self-help guide. Send us the endorsed summons and complaint, the unit or cabin number, and the names of all adult occupants you know. From 2027, AB 747 changes the posting rules for eviction summonses; our AB 747 guide explains them.

Small claims cases also go to the Civil Clerk's Office. The court's civil and small claims FAQ says exhibits for a small claims trial held by Zoom follow the court's standing order on small claims trials, and points people to the Self-Help Center for help before the hearing. The defendant still has to be served before that hearing, and the proof of service has to be filed. Our proof of service guide shows what that proof contains.

Probate, guardianship and family papers

Probate filings for a Forestville estate go to the Probate Clerk's Office at the Cleveland Avenue courthouse. People without an attorney use the Probate Window across from Courtroom 18. The court's probate page explains several steps that affect notice and service:

  • Examiner notes. A probate examiner reviews routine petitions, and the notes flagging problems are generally available on the court's online case portal three weeks before the hearing. For trust petitions under Probate Code section 850, notes are published 45 days ahead so notice problems can be fixed in time.
  • Tentative rulings. Probate rulings are available by phone at (707) 521-6607 after 2:00 p.m. the day before the hearing; guardianship rulings after 11:00 a.m.
  • Emergency ex parte. In conservatorship, estate and trust matters, an application has to be in before 10:00 a.m., and attorneys must e-file it. Opposition is due by 10:00 a.m. the same day, and if the opposition can't be served, a declaration explaining why is filed instead.
  • Guardianship investigations. When the proposed guardian is a relative, a court investigator checks records for that person and any adult in the home and may visit the home. For a non-relative, the Department of Social Services investigates.

Court staff can't give legal advice; for a referral, the probate page lists the Sonoma County Lawyer Referral Service at (707) 546-5297. Notices of hearing and citations sometimes have to reach relatives who live in rural places like Forestville. Send us the notice, the hearing date and each person's address, and we serve them and return the proof.

Family law cases are filed with the Family Law Clerk's Office, whose phones are answered from 8:00 a.m. to noon. The family law page says ex parte matters are reviewed weekdays at 10:00 a.m. under Local Rule 9.12E.

Businesses and people who have moved

To serve a company, check the California Secretary of State's record for its agent for service of process; our serving corporations page explains what to do next. Forestville process server questions

Not listed here? Call 855-582-5776 during business hours, Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.

Which courthouse handles a Forestville eviction?

The Civil and Family Law Courthouse, 3055 Cleveland Avenue, Santa Rosa. The Sonoma court's location page lists civil, unlawful detainer, small claims, family law and probate filings there, with the clerk's office open 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays. The court's civil clerk is at (707) 521-6610.

Is Forestville a town with its own government?

No. The Census Bureau counts Forestville as a Census Designated Place, an unincorporated community with 3,264 residents in 2020. Sonoma County is its local government. For service, that changes nothing: the server goes to the street address on your papers, and the case is a Sonoma County case.

Can the Sonoma County Sheriff serve my Forestville papers on a rush?

No. The Sheriff's Civil Bureau page says it doesn't offer rush service and processes documents in the order received. It also requires Judicial Council form SER-001 with most requests and charges $1.25 a page to print documents submitted electronically. If your hearing is close, a private process server is the faster route.

Will the court's self-help center serve my papers?

No. The Sonoma court's Civil Self-Help Center lists serving legal documents among the things it doesn't do. It helps walk-ins Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to noon, with civil harassment and elder abuse restraining orders and eviction answers, and sees small claims cases by appointment. Service is up to you, the Sheriff or a process server.

Does the whole 95436 ZIP Code area belong to Forestville?

No. The Census Bureau's 2020 relationship file puts about a quarter of its land inside the Forestville CDP. Small edges fall in Windsor and Guerneville, and roughly three-quarters is outside any town or Census place. All of it is in Sonoma County, so the court is the same.

When do I have to e-file if the papers must be served the same day?

By 5:00 p.m. The Sonoma court's e-filing page says an electronic filing is timely until 11:59 p.m. on the day it's due, except that a document requiring same-day service has to be filed by 5:00 p.m. that court day. Attorneys and represented parties must e-file civil, probate and family cases under Local Rule 17.22.
