Walnut Creek had 70,127 residents at the 2020 Census. BART describes it as the business and arts center for Contra Costa County. Valpro Attorney Services delivers summonses, complaints, subpoenas, family law papers and unlawful detainer notices to people and companies in the city, in the gated Rossmoor community, and in the unincorporated pockets that share its ZIP Codes.

We have no Walnut Creek office. Requests are handled from Sacramento, about 57 miles away in a straight line, and status updates come by email.

The Walnut Creek courthouse is for traffic and juvenile cases

People see "Superior Court" on Ygnacio Valley Road and assume that's where a Walnut Creek lawsuit goes. It isn't. The court's page for the Walnut Creek Juvenile and Traffic Center, 640 Ygnacio Valley Road, lists two kinds of cases: traffic and juvenile. There are four courtrooms, one on the ground floor and three upstairs. The traffic clerks take payments for traffic cases only.

Everything a landlord, a creditor or a civil litigant files goes to Martinez:

  • Civil, limited and unlimited: filed at the Wakefield Taylor Courthouse, 725 Court Street, Martinez. Unlimited cases are heard there, but since January 5, 2026 the court has assigned limited civil cases ($35,000 or less) to Department 14 in Richmond.
  • Small claims and unlawful detainer: filed in the court serving the city where the dispute started. The court's table lists Walnut Creek, ZIP Codes 94595 through 94598, under Wakefield Taylor.
  • Family law, including restraining orders and adoptions: the Spinetta Family Law Center, 751 Pine Street, Martinez.
  • Juvenile cases are heard only in Walnut Creek, and juvenile appeals are filed there too.

Source: contracosta.courts.ca.gov, checked October 2026.

In straight-line terms, Wakefield Taylor is about 9.5 miles from central Walnut Creek and Spinetta about 7.9. A paper dropped at the Ygnacio Valley Road counter by mistake isn't filed in the right place, and a deadline can slip while it's sorted out. If a filing needs to reach Martinez, add it to the Service Request and we'll e-file it or take it to the right counter. More on that is on our Contra Costa County court filings page.

Planning around the Martinez counters

Since Walnut Creek civil papers end up at 725 Court Street, that building's schedule is the one that counts. The court's Wakefield Taylor page lists:

  • Clerk windows from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with phones answered until 3:00 p.m.
  • A drop box that keeps working an hour after the windows close: papers left in it from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. are deemed filed on the same day.
  • Metered parking on every street around the courthouse.

Old files need lead time. On the court's records page, civil documents filed after November 13, 2007 can be viewed on the Court Public Portal. Earlier files are kept at an off-site facility and take about 10 business days to reach the main courthouse, so order one in person or by phone, then bring photo ID to look at it. Certified copies must be made from a copy the court provides, so one printed at your office won't work.

Martinez civil hearings are in person, and parties may choose to appear remotely. The court's civil page says Zoom is now its only remote platform, and it no longer supports CourtCall.

Rossmoor: a gated community inside the city

Rossmoor is a 55+ community. Its FAQ says Rossmoor is part of the city of Walnut Creek and is reached from Interstate 680 and Highway 24. It describes 24-hour security with a manned front gate. Access is only for residents and approved guests and vendors.

That gate shapes how a Rossmoor service gets done. The server has to identify who they're there to see before going any further. Requests move faster when they include:

  1. The resident's full street address inside Rossmoor, including any unit number.
  2. A phone number for the person, if you have one.
  3. A description or photo, since many residents live alone and a neighbor won't confirm a name.
  4. Any other address, such as a family member's home or a second residence, in case the gate stop doesn't lead to service.

Rossmoor's FAQ also mentions The Waterford, a building of 300 independently owned condominiums. For an address there, include the unit. For papers going to an older resident, our guide to who can serve papers covers who may hand them over. Our proof of service guide shows what the proof has to state.

Papers to serve in Walnut Creek?

Unincorporated neighborhoods with Walnut Creek addresses

A "Walnut Creek, CA" mailing address doesn't always mean city limits. The Census Bureau's 2020 relationship file maps seven unincorporated communities inside Walnut Creek's ZIP Code areas:

ZIP Code areaUnincorporated communities mapped inside it
94595Saranap, Castle Hill
94596San Miguel
94597Acalanes Ridge, Contra Costa Centre
94598North Gate, Shell Ridge, part of Contra Costa Centre

Contra Costa Centre is the area around the Pleasant Hill/Contra Costa Centre BART station. BART lists that station at 1365 Treat Boulevard, Walnut Creek, CA 94597, even though the station name points to Pleasant Hill.

For a court filing, the difference rarely matters. The court's table routes ZIP Codes 94595 through 94598 to Martinez whether the address is in the city or in an unincorporated pocket. It can still matter elsewhere. A city business license, a local ordinance or a police report may depend on whether the property is in the city. Copy the address exactly as it reads on the papers, and we'll serve it as written.

Downtown offices and the BART corridor

The Walnut Creek BART station is at 200 Ygnacio Valley Road, the same road as the traffic courthouse at 640. Downtown has a mix of shops, restaurants and professional offices. That makes workplace service common here: an employee at a retail counter, a professional in a suite, a manager at a restaurant.

A workplace attempt works best with:

  • The business name and suite number, and the floor if the building has more than one.
  • The person's usual hours. Many retail and restaurant workers don't keep a 9-to-5 schedule.
  • Whether there's a reception desk or building security. Office lobbies may require a check-in before anyone goes upstairs.
  • A home address as a backup. Service at home is often simpler than service at a shop with customers present.

For papers aimed at the company itself, a store manager usually isn't the one to receive them. Look up the agent for service of process on the California Secretary of State's bizfile Online. Many national retailers name a commercial agent, so see our pages on serving corporations, CSC and CT Corporation.

Small claims papers from Walnut Creek

A small claims case against a contractor, a former landlord or a local business follows the county's rules. The court's small claims page sets the rules:

  • Limits: $12,500 for an individual (including a sole proprietor or DBA), $6,250 for a corporation, LLC or partnership.
  • Frequency: no more than two claims over $2,500 per calendar year, statewide.
  • Filing fees run $30, $50 or $75 depending on the amount, or $100 per case for anyone who has filed more than 12 in 12 months.
  • Hearings are in person in Martinez, Pittsburg or Richmond. Remote appearance requires compliance with CCP 367.75 and form RA-010.
  • Remote-hearing papers must reach the clerk in person, by drop box or by overnight delivery 3 court days before the hearing. Electronic delivery isn't allowed.

The court's civil page puts limited civil at $35,000 or less and unlimited above that. We serve the claim and can file the proof (filing the proof of service is an additional fee), and we can carry hearing papers to Martinez if the 3-court-day cutoff is close.

Can I file my small claims case at the Walnut Creek courthouse?

No. The court's location page lists only traffic and juvenile cases at 640 Ygnacio Valley Road. Small claims and unlawful detainer cases from Walnut Creek ZIP Codes 94595 through 94598 are filed at the Wakefield Taylor Courthouse, 725 Court Street, Martinez, and so are all civil cases. Is Rossmoor part of Walnut Creek, and how does a server get in?

Rossmoor's own FAQ says it is part of the city of Walnut Creek and has a manned front gate that admits only residents and approved guests and vendors. Give us the resident's full address and any phone number you have, so the server can identify the person at the gate.

The address says Walnut Creek, but is it really inside the city?

Not always. Census maps unincorporated communities such as Saranap, Castle Hill, San Miguel, Acalanes Ridge, Shell Ridge, North Gate and Contra Costa Centre inside Walnut Creek ZIP Code areas. For court routing it makes no difference, because the court sends ZIP Codes 94595 through 94598 to Martinez.

What are the small claims limits in Contra Costa County?

The court's small claims page lists $12,500 for an individual, including a sole proprietor or DBA, and $6,250 for a corporation, LLC or partnership. No one may file more than two claims over $2,500 in a calendar year statewide. Source: contracosta.courts.ca.gov, checked October 2026.

Can I email evidence to the court for a remote small claims hearing?

No. The small claims page says that for a remote hearing, parties must serve and submit documents to the clerk's office in person, by drop box or by overnight delivery 3 court days before the hearing, and electronic delivery is not permitted. Source: contracosta.courts.ca.gov, checked October 2026.
