Kings County has one courthouse, and it's in Hanford

Unlike most valley counties, Kings County doesn't split its cases across branches. The court lists a single courthouse location:

CourthouseAddressWhat happens thereHours
Kings County Superior Court1640 Kings County Drive, Hanford, CA 93230Departments 1–10. Civil, small claims, landlord/tenant, family law and probate matters are handled hereLobby Mon–Fri 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.; phones 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. (traffic, criminal and civil division phones until 4:00 p.m.)

The main number is (559) 582-1010, and general questions go to information@kings.courts.ca.gov. So a case from Lemoore, Corcoran or Avenal is filed in the same Hanford building as a case from downtown Hanford.

Security screening at 1640 Kings County Drive

The court calls its building a full security facility. Everyone goes through a weapons screening device, and every hand-carried item is x-rayed. The court's dress rules bar shorts, tank tops, crop tops and bare feet. Parking is on the north and west sides of the building, reached from Kings County Drive or 12th Avenue, and the entrances are the south and west doors.

That matters for counter filings and for serving someone at a hearing. Build in time for the line.

E-filing has been mandatory here since 2021

Kings County moved to mandatory e-filing on July 1, 2021. The court's online case filing page lists these case types:

  • Unlimited and limited civil
  • Small claims
  • Probate and guardianship
  • Family law and family support
  • Adoption
  • Mental health

Self-represented parties are exempt under California Rules of Court, rule 2.253(b)(2), and may e-file voluntarily. The same page says a document served electronically between 12:00 a.m. and 11:59:59 p.m. on a court day is deemed served that day, and one served on a non-court day is deemed served the next court day.

Some documents still go on paper. The court lists filings it doesn't accept through e-filing:

Case typeNot accepted by e-filing
Family lawDefaults, judgments, notices of judgment, surrogacy actions, termination of parental rights
ProbateWills, codicils, bonds

If a court reporter, complex case, ex parte or first appearance fee applies, the court has its own notice forms for paying that fee through eFile. We handle both routes for Hanford cases. See Kings County court filing for details, and same-day court filing for how rush filings usually work.

Papers to serve in Hanford?

Small claims cases in Hanford

Small claims are heard at the same Hanford courthouse. The court lists a Small Claims Advisor at 1400 West Lacy Blvd., Hanford, phone (559) 852-4430.

On service, the court's small claims page is specific:

  • The plaintiff can't serve the papers. A non-party adult, a professional process server or the sheriff can.
  • The clerk can mail the claim by certified mail for $15.00 per defendant. Check before the hearing whether the receipt came back.
  • After personal or substituted service, the server completes Proof of Service form SC-104, and it has to be filed with the court 5 days before the hearing.
  • Without a proof of service on file, the matter may be continued or dropped from the calendar.

Substituted service at a home or business isn't complete until 10 days after the follow-up copy is mailed, the court notes. When the hearing is a few weeks out, that 10-day wait plus the 5-day filing deadline leaves little room. Send the claim early, and choose Rush if the date is close.
