Looking for a process server in Alameda? Valpro Attorney Services serves summonses, complaints, subpoenas, restraining order papers, small claims and eviction papers anywhere in the city, on the main island and on Bay Farm Island. Alameda had 78,280 residents at the 2020 Census.
We run Alameda requests from our Sacramento office, about 73.1 miles away. There is no Valpro Attorney Services office on the island. You send the papers online, and every update comes by email.
A courthouse in town that doesn't take new cases
Alameda has a superior court building inside city limits, which leads people to assume they can file there. The George E. McDonald Hall of Justice sits at 2233 Shore Line Drive. The court's page for it lists:
- Departments 301 to 303. The civil division page assigns writ matters to Department 303, along with Departments 24 and 25 in Oakland.
- A Records Management Unit, open in person Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Friday until 2:00 p.m.
- A Settlement Unit.
It doesn't list a filing clerk for new civil, small claims, family or eviction cases. The court's civil filing counters are in Oakland and Hayward.
The building has a small free lot next door. The court's page puts the nearest BART station, Fruitvale, 2.4 miles away, with AC Transit buses linking the two. If a hearing is set in Department 301, 302 or 303, plan the trip with that in mind.
Where an Alameda case is filed
| Alameda matter | Where the papers go | Where it's heard |
|---|---|---|
| Civil lawsuit | René C. Davidson Courthouse, 1225 Fallon St, Oakland, or Hayward Hall of Justice, or e-file | The assigned department, which can be 301–303 in Alameda |
| Unlawful detainer | Either civil location, or e-file | Dept. 511, Hayward |
| Small claims | Oakland, Hayward or e-filing | In person in Hayward |
| Family law | Hayward Hall of Justice; DVPA papers may also go to Davidson | Hayward |
| Probate, conservatorship, guardianship | Berkeley Courthouse clerk's office only | Berkeley |
Taken from the Alameda County Superior Court's civil, small claims, family law and probate pages in October 2026.
The Fallon Street courthouse is the short hop, about 4 miles from central Alameda in a straight line. Hayward is about 10.8 miles away and Berkeley about 8.9. A single Alameda case can touch all three: the complaint filed in Oakland, a family matter in Hayward, an estate petition in Berkeley. We can file at any of them, or e-file, and send you the endorsed copies. Our Alameda County court filings page lists what to include.
Getting copies of an older Alameda file
The McDonald building matters most for records. The court's records page lists it as one of three places to view civil case records in person, with its own number, (510) 891-6005. Davidson and Hayward are the other two. Two rules from that page shape the trip:
- Files stay in the building. They can be viewed on the premises but not removed.
- No phone or email research. The court takes records search requests by mail, and charges for searches and copies.
Many non-confidential civil records are also on the court's eCourt Public Portal. When the document you need isn't there, our document retrieval service can send someone to the counter to pull and copy it. Tell us the case number, the party names and the documents you want.
Two ZIP Code areas, both inside the city
The Census matches two ZIP Code areas to Alameda, and almost all of both is city land:
- 94501 covers the main island. About 99.4% of its land is inside Alameda city.
- 94502 is entirely inside Alameda city and holds about a quarter of the city's land. The San Francisco Bay Ferry places its Harbor Bay terminal, 215 Adelphian Way, on Bay Farm Island in this ZIP Code area.
Water is the other half of the story. The 2020 Census counts about 27 square kilometers of land in Alameda city and more than 32 square kilometers of water. For a server, that means the route in and out matters. A request with the right side of the island and a cross street saves time.
These figures come from the Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file. ZIP Code areas approximate postal ZIP Codes.
Papers to serve in Alameda?
What helps on an Alameda address
An Alameda address can be a house, a converted multi-unit building or a large complex. Put these in the Letter of Instruction:
- Unit and building. A front house and a rear cottage can share one street number.
- Main island or Bay Farm. Say which, especially if the papers only give a street name.
- Ferry riders. The ferry system lists two Alameda terminals, Main Street Alameda and Harbor Bay. A commuter may leave early and return late. Tell us the usual hours, or give a work address.
- A photo or description. In a shared house it tells the server which adult to look for.
If the person works in San Francisco, we can serve them there too. Our San Francisco County page covers that court.
Restraining orders and family papers from Alameda
Protective order papers often need fast, careful service. Under the court's family law page, domestic violence protective order papers can be filed at the René C. Davidson Courthouse as well as in Hayward, which gives an Alameda filer the nearer counter. All other family law documents, from a divorce petition to a custody request, must be filed in Hayward.
Civil harassment cases are a separate track. The civil division page says civil harassment matters, like small claims, are heard in Departments 519 and 521 at the Hayward Hall of Justice.
When the restrained person has to be served, tell us everything that helps the server find them without a scene: a recent photo, a vehicle and plate, a workplace and shift, and whether they're likely to be at the Alameda address. Mark the hearing date on the request so the server knows how much time there is.
An Alameda estate
Probate papers for an Alameda estate go to one place, the clerk's office at the Berkeley Courthouse, 2120 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. The court's probate page says documents must be filed no later than two court days before the hearing to be considered. If a notice of hearing also has to be served on heirs or creditors, send their names and addresses with the petition and we can handle both.
Tenants, landlords and small claims
An Alameda eviction is filed in Oakland or Hayward, or e-filed, and assigned to Department 511 in Hayward. Small claims papers go to the same two counters or online, and the hearing is in person in Hayward. The small claims limits are $12,500 for an individual and $6,250 for a business.
Before the complaint, many landlords need a notice served. Send it with the occupants' names, the unit and any gate or entry details. Our post on rush legal document service explains when the faster option makes sense. The proof of service guide covers what the proof should show. Starting January 1, 2027, AB 747 changes substituted service, and our AB 747 guide explains how.
Serving an Alameda company
Search the company on the California Secretary of State's bizfile Online and note the agent for service of process. Send us the agent's name and the address exactly as listed. A receptionist or a store clerk usually isn't authorized to accept for the company.
If the agent is a commercial registered agent, the address is often outside Alameda. Our serving corporations page explains each route, with pages for CSC and CT Corporation.
