Madera is the seat of Madera County and its largest city, with 66,224 people at the 2020 Census and an estimated 69,017 by mid-2025. It's also where the whole county's court business happens. The Superior Court has one building, on South G Street, about a mile from the city's Census center point, and every kind of case is filed and heard there.
That makes a Madera job simpler than most on the filing side. The harder part is usually the address. Madera's two ZIP Code areas stretch far beyond city limits into unincorporated subdivisions and open country, and a server needs more than a street name to find a house set back from a county road. The city is about 138 miles from our Sacramento office, so we plan the route and the attempt windows before anyone drives out.
One building on South G Street
The court's location page lists a single address: Madera Superior Court, 200 South G Street, Madera, CA 93637. It describes the site as a full-service court handling all case types. Traffic, criminal and juvenile matters each have their own division number, but civil filers deal with one window.
The Civil Division, reached at (559) 416-5525, takes civil, small claims, family law and probate filings and answers filing questions for all four. The main court line is (559) 416-5599. Phones are answered from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, except court holidays.
Here is how common Madera matters are filed:
| Madera matter | Where it goes |
|---|---|
| Unlawful detainer (residential eviction) | Civil Division, 200 South G Street |
| Limited civil, $35,000 or less | Civil Division |
| Unlimited civil, over $35,000 | Civil Division |
| Small claims | Civil Division; hearings Fridays at 9:00 a.m., Dept. 44 or 45 |
| Divorce, custody, support, parentage | Civil Division window; family support cases heard only at the main courthouse |
| Probate, guardianship, conservatorship | Probate Department, inside the Civil Division |
| Domestic and gun violence restraining orders | Civil Division window, or free online through the court's Public Portal |
The court's civil page lists residential unlawful detainers, civil harassment, employment harassment and elder abuse cases among its limited civil matters. It also notes the limited civil ceiling rose from $25,000 to $35,000 on January 1, 2024, under Senate Bill 71.
The 3:00 p.m. window and the 4:00 p.m. drop box
Madera's clerk's windows close earlier than many courts. Filings are accepted at the windows from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. From 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., papers can go in a drop box instead. Cash can never go in the drop box, so a filing paid in cash has to reach the window before 3:00.
The court's division pages add two practical notes. The busiest times at the civil window are 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. And anyone who needs a filing processed on the spot, or copies pulled from a case file, should be at the window by 2:00 p.m. When we file and serve on one request, we plan around those hours so the conformed copy is in hand before the server goes out.
Deadlines that move a Madera case
A few local timing rules come up again and again in Madera requests:
- Civil ex parte. Papers, with the 24-hour notice or non-notice declaration, are due by 11:00 a.m. on the work day before the hearing. Hearings are at 8:15 a.m. in Department 37, 40, 44 or 45.
- Family law and probate ex parte. Due by 10:00 a.m. the day before.
- Everything else before a hearing. The civil, family and probate pages each say documents are to be filed two days before the court date.
- Probate petitions. The court says it has no probate examiner on staff, so a petition with errors may simply sit. Guardianship and conservatorship investigations are run by Family Court Services.
If a notice of ex parte has to be served before the hearing, tell us the hearing date and department when you upload. A same-day attempt in Madera is easier to plan in the morning than at 4:00 p.m.
A new complaint can be visible before it's served
Madera runs something most courts don't: a media access portal for new civil unlimited complaints. The court says the portal can show an initial complaint for five calendar days from the date it was submitted, including complaints not yet fully reviewed or accepted. Subsequent filings, sealed records and confidential cases are left out.
For a plaintiff, that changes the timing. A defendant who watches the portal could learn about the suit before a server knocks. If that's a concern, send the Service Request the same day you file, choose Rush, and include every home, work and mailing address you have.
Papers to serve in Madera?
Madera ZIP Codes run far past city limits
The Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place relationship file shows how little of Madera's mail area is the city itself:
- 93637 covers about 726 square kilometers of land. Only about 4% of it is inside Madera city limits. Small slivers fall in the Parkwood, La Vina and Madera Acres Census places, and nearly all the rest is unincorporated county land.
- 93638 is smaller, about 234 square kilometers. About 5% is Madera city, about 8% is Madera Acres and about 2% is Parksdale. Roughly 85% lies outside any city or Census place.
So a "Madera, CA 93638" address can be a tract home off a city street or a house on several acres north of town. For rural parcels, give us the nearest cross road, a description of the gate or driveway, and whether the house can be seen from the road. Remote areas are subject to different timelines, and a long unpaved approach or a locked gate can add an attempt before anyone answers the door.
Evictions and small claims in Madera
A Madera landlord files the unlawful detainer at the Civil Division and then has the summons and complaint served on each tenant. After personal service, the tenant has 10 court days to file an answer. Give us the unit number, the names of every adult occupant named in the papers, and any notes on when people are usually home. General information, not legal advice.
Small claims are also filed at the Civil Division window. The court's small claims page explains that the defendant can be served by almost anyone 18 or older who isn't the plaintiff, or by the court through the mail. A personal server signs proof of service form SC-104. A defendant who lives in Madera County must be served at least 15 days before the hearing, or at least 20 days if they live in another county (CCP § 116.340). With Friday 9:00 a.m. hearings, count backward from the Friday on your claim.
Family, probate and child support papers
Divorce, legal separation, custody and parentage cases are filed at the same building. The family law page asks filers to call the Civil Division with filing questions and notes that family support cases are heard only at the main courthouse. The county's Local Child Support Agency is a separate office, at 120 North Lake Street in Madera.
A family law petition and summons must reach the other party, and the server's proof goes back to the court. For probate, a notice of hearing or a citation may need to go to heirs who live in Madera, Chowchilla, Fresno County or farther away. List each person and address in one request so the attempts can be planned together. Our proof of service guide shows what the signed proof includes.
Filing on paper or online
E-filing is optional in Madera. The court's e-filing page says it is available to attorneys and self-represented litigants in civil, family law, probate and small claims cases, around the clock, through an approved electronic filing service provider, and that it is not mandatory at this time. Journal Technologies runs the court's e-filing manager. Documents that need an original signature where an electronic one isn't allowed are exempt from e-filing, as the page notes.
Domestic violence and gun violence restraining order petitions can be filed free on the court's Public Portal. Filed through a provider instead, they may carry the provider's own fee. Our Madera County court filing page explains how we can file at the window or electronically and then serve the filed papers.
2027 rules for substituted service
On January 1, 2027, changes from AB 747 take effect. Three good-faith attempts at personal delivery, on 3 different days at 3 different times, show reasonable diligence before papers are left with another adult at the home (CCP § 415.20(b)(2)). Each county clerk's register of process servers also becomes public (Bus. & Prof. Code § 22355). For rural Madera addresses, where each attempt can mean a long drive, those three windows should be planned from the start. Our AB 747 guide explains the changes, and who can serve papers in California covers who may serve. We make no guarantees for service. General information, not legal advice.
Serving a company with a Madera address
For a corporation or LLC, look up its agent for service of process on the Secretary of State's bizfile Online and send the agent's name and address exactly as listed. A small Madera business often names the owner at a home address. Larger companies usually name a commercial registered agent, whose listed address may be in another county entirely. Our serving corporations page explains each option. If a person has moved and the address no longer works, skip tracing can look for a newer one.
