Chowchilla is Madera County's second city, with 19,039 residents at the 2020 Census. It sits at the north end of the county, near the Merced County line, and it has no courthouse. Every case that starts in Chowchilla goes to the Madera Superior Court building on South G Street in Madera, roughly 15 miles away in a straight line from the city's Census center point.
So a Chowchilla request usually has two parts: papers served in or around Chowchilla, and papers filed in Madera. We handle both from our Sacramento office, about 124 miles to the north, and plan them as one job. The sections below cover what's specific to Chowchilla: the court trip, the size of the ZIP Code area, people in custody nearby, and the county line just north of town.
No courthouse in Chowchilla
The court's locations page lists one address for the entire county: 200 South G Street, Madera, CA 93637, described as a full-service court handling all case types. There's no branch, satellite clerk or drop box in Chowchilla. That holds for every kind of Chowchilla case:
- Evictions. The court lists residential unlawful detainers among its limited civil cases, filed at the Civil Division window in Madera.
- Debt and contract suits. Limited civil covers $35,000 or less, and unlimited civil anything above. Both are filed at the same window.
- Small claims. Filed in Madera and heard Fridays at 9:00 a.m. in Department 44 or 45.
- Family law. Divorce, custody, support and parentage filings go through the Civil Division window too. Family support cases are heard only at the main courthouse.
- Probate, guardianship and conservatorship. Filed with the Probate Department, which sits inside the Civil Division.
The Civil Division's number is (559) 416-5525, answered from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on court days.
Getting papers to South G Street on time
For Chowchilla filers, the Madera clerk's schedule matters more than the drive. The windows accept filings from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. A drop box takes papers from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., but never cash. The court's civil page says the window is busiest from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. and again from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m., and asks anyone who needs same-visit processing or case-file copies to be there by 2:00 p.m.
There's another route. E-filing is optional in Madera, and the court's e-filing page says attorneys and self-represented parties can file civil, family law, probate and small claims documents at any hour through an approved provider. When papers are filed electronically, the filed copies come back through the provider, so the server can head out without waiting on a courier run to Madera.
Two deadline rules apply to Chowchilla cases the same as any other in the county. Civil ex parte papers are due by 11:00 a.m. on the work day before the hearing, and family law and probate ex partes by 10:00 a.m. The division pages also say other documents are to be filed two days before the court date. Our Madera County court filing page explains how a filing and a service can share one request.
93610 is mostly open country
Chowchilla has one ZIP Code area, 93610, and it's large. The Census Bureau's 2020 relationship file measures about 682 square kilometers of land in it. About 4.2% of that land is inside Chowchilla city limits and about 2.9% is the unincorporated community of Fairmead. The other 93% or so lies outside any city or Census place.
In practice, a "Chowchilla, CA 93610" address might be a house on a city street, a home in Fairmead, or a rural parcel several miles out with the residence well back from the road. For anything outside town, send:
- the physical address, not a P.O. box
- the nearest cross road, or a map pin if the address is hard to find
- a description of the gate, driveway and any dogs
- the vehicle the person drives and the hours they're usually home
Remote areas are subject to different timelines. A server who can find the right driveway on the first pass makes the first attempt count.
Workplaces help too. Some people are much easier to find at the job than at home, and a rural home can sit empty from early morning to dark. If you know where the person works, the shift they keep, or the name of the ranch or business, put it in the request. A workplace attempt has its own etiquette: the server asks for the person by name and hands the papers over without making a scene, and a manager who refuses entry ends that attempt rather than starting an argument.
People in custody near Chowchilla
State prisons operate near Chowchilla. If the person you need served is held in one, the request works differently from a home or business service. Each facility sets its own rules on who may come in, when, and how legal papers are handed over, and those rules decide whether and how service can happen.
Please call 855-582-5776 before sending papers for anyone in custody. Tell us the person's full name, any booking or identification number you have, the facility, and the hearing date if there is one, and we'll go over what the facility allows before a server is dispatched. If you only have an old home address for someone who may now be in custody, say so, since a wasted trip to that address helps no one.
Papers to serve in Chowchilla?
Probate and guardianship papers
When someone who lived in Chowchilla dies, or a relative asks to become a child's guardian, the petition is filed with the Probate Department inside the Civil Division in Madera. The court's probate page says it has no probate examiner on staff and that filers must complete the forms properly themselves or get help from an attorney or paralegal. A petition with a gap may simply wait, so check it before it goes in.
Probate guardianship and conservatorship investigations are handled through Family Court Services, which has its own line, (559) 416-5560. Notices in these cases often go to parents, grandparents, adult children or other relatives who have scattered well beyond Madera County. Put every person and address in a single request. We'll sort the in-county attempts from the out-of-area ones and tell you which will take longer, so the hearing date isn't a surprise.
The Merced County line just north of town
Chowchilla is close to the county line, and people move back and forth across it. Merced is about 18 miles away and Atwater about 25. A Chowchilla case filed in Madera doesn't move when the defendant moves to Merced County; the server simply goes to the new address.
The county line does matter for small claims timing. Under CCP § 116.340, a defendant who lives in the county where the case is filed must be served at least 15 days before the hearing, and one who lives elsewhere at least 20 days before. A Chowchilla claim against someone now living in Merced County needs the longer lead time. General information, not legal advice.
Landlord and tenant papers
A Chowchilla landlord files the unlawful detainer in Madera, then has the summons and complaint served on each tenant named. Once a tenant is personally served, they have 10 court days to answer. In a duplex or a house with several adults, list every occupant the papers name, since each one needs to be served. Tell us if the property has a back unit, a shared driveway or a gate.
For small claims, such as a deposit dispute, the Madera small claims page says the defendant can be served by almost any adult who isn't the plaintiff, and that the court can also serve by mail. A personal server completes form SC-104 after delivery. Our post on how to find a defendant in California helps when the tenant left without a forwarding address, and skip tracing can search for a current one.
Family court papers from Chowchilla
A Chowchilla divorce, custody or parentage case is filed at the Madera courthouse, and the petition and summons are then served on the other parent or spouse wherever they live. If that person is in custody, the call-first rule above applies. If they live out of the area, give us every address you have, including work.
The county's Local Child Support Agency is a separate office at 120 North Lake Street in Madera. Domestic and gun violence restraining order petitions can be filed free on the court's Public Portal, and the restrained person still has to receive the order and the hearing notice from someone other than the protected party.
New substituted service rules in 2027
AB 747 takes effect on January 1, 2027. From then on, three good-faith attempts at personal delivery, on 3 different days at 3 different times, show reasonable diligence before papers are left with another adult at the home (CCP § 415.20(b)(2)). Clerks' registers of process servers also become public (Bus. & Prof. Code § 22355). On a rural 93610 parcel, spreading attempts across mornings, evenings and a weekend is part of the plan from day one. See our AB 747 guide and our proof of service guide for what the signed proof shows. We make no guarantees for service. General information, not legal advice.
