Lebec is an unincorporated community on the southern edge of Kern County, close to the Los Angeles County line. The Census Bureau counted 1,239 residents in the Lebec Census-designated place in 2020. California State Parks describes nearby Fort Tejon State Historic Park as sitting near the top of Grapevine Canyon, reached from the Fort Tejon exit off I-5, and the USGS places Tejon Pass, in Los Angeles County, about three miles south of the Lebec townsite.
We serve summonses, complaints, small claims, eviction papers, family law documents and subpoenas at Lebec homes, businesses and rural parcels. Lebec requests are handled from our Sacramento office, about 297 miles north, and the server makes the attempts at the Lebec address.
Kern's venue table puts Lebec in Lamont
Kern County doesn't send every case to Bakersfield. Its Local Rule 1.7.4 sets venue by ZIP Code using a table published as Appendix A, and that table lists Lebec, ZIP 93243, under the Lamont Multi-Divisional Courthouse. The Lamont sheet, marked as changed effective March 12, 2025, lists these case types:
- Civil: civil harassment, limited civil, name changes, small claims and unlawful detainers
- Criminal: felony and misdemeanor
- Traffic: infractions and juvenile traffic
The courthouse is at 12022 Main Street, Lamont, on the west side of the street just south of the post office complex, according to the court's location page. It's open Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to noon, and its phone is (661) 610-7100. In a straight line it's about 28 miles north of Lebec.
Where each Lebec matter goes
The Lamont assignment covers the everyday cases. Kern's Local Rule 1.7.5 pulls several kinds of cases to Bakersfield no matter the ZIP Code:
| Lebec matter | Courthouse | Straight-line miles from central Lebec |
|---|---|---|
| Eviction, small claims, limited civil ($35,000 or less) | Lamont, 12022 Main St. | 27.7 |
| Civil harassment, name change | Lamont | 27.7 |
| Unlimited civil, over $35,000 | Metropolitan Division Justice Building, 1215 Truxtun Ave., Bakersfield | 37.1 |
| Probate, guardianship, conservatorship, trusts | Juvenile Justice Center, 2100 College Ave., Bakersfield | 37.5 |
| Adoptions, abandonments, local child support agency cases | Metropolitan Division, Family Law Department | 37.1 |
| Criminal and traffic | Lamont | 27.7 |
Distances run from the Census Bureau's internal point for the Lebec CDP to the coordinates on each courthouse page. Dollar limits are from the court's civil and small claims page, checked October 2026.
One exception helps property owners. Rule 1.7.5(b) lets a quiet title action that arises outside metropolitan Bakersfield be filed at the branch courthouse that is the right venue for the property. For a Lebec parcel, that's Lamont. Other unlimited cases still go to the Justice Building.
Family law: confirm the courthouse first
Here the court's own pages don't line up neatly. Kern's family law page lists Lamont among its family law locations, with the same address and phone. But the Lamont sheet in Appendix A lists no family law case types, while the Delano, Mojave and Shafter sheets do. Rule 1.7.5(g)(1) says the first family law petition goes to the division set by the Appendix A table for the petitioner's ZIP Code, filed with a local venue declaration, form FL-2427.
For a Lebec divorce or custody case, call the Lamont clerk at (661) 610-7100 or the family law line at the Justice Building, (661) 610-6400, and confirm where the petition belongs before filing. Domestic violence restraining order requests are exempt from the family venue rules under Rule 1.7.5(g)(5). Once the petition is filed, the respondent is served wherever they live, in Lebec or anywhere else.
Gorman, Frazier Park and the county line
The 93243 ZIP Code area is large and mostly empty of named places. The Census Bureau's 2020 relationship file shows the Lebec CDP covering only about 9% of its land. The other 91% is outside any city or Census-designated place. A small piece of the Lebec CDP also falls in the neighboring 93225 ZIP Code area.
Kern's venue table lists Gorman under the same ZIP Code and the same Lamont courthouse. The USGS place-name database, though, puts Gorman in Los Angeles County, as it does Tejon Pass. A Gorman address may belong to the Los Angeles court, not Kern. Check the parcel's county before choosing a court, and copy the address on the papers exactly. Nearby Lake Hughes and Castaic are Los Angeles County communities too, outside Kern's venue table.
To the west, the venue table also sends Frazier Park, Lake of the Woods and Pine Mountain, all ZIP 93225, and Pine Mountain Club, ZIP 93222, to Lamont. Cases from those mountain communities share the Lamont building with Lebec's. Census ZIP Code areas approximate postal ZIP Codes.
What the server needs for a Lebec address
Remote areas are subject to different timelines, and most of 93243 is rural. These details save trips:
- A physical address, not a P.O. box. CCP § 415.20 lets papers be left at a home, workplace or usual mailing address, but it rules out a U.S. Postal Service post office box. If the papers only show a box, look for a street address or a parcel number.
- A map pin. On a rural road, the number may not be visible from the pavement.
- Gate and access notes. Locked gates, shared private roads, dogs and whether the house can be seen from the road.
- The person's routine. When they leave, where they work, and whether they're home on weekends.
- Other adults on the property. Names help the server know who answered the door.

Papers to serve in Lebec?
Kern small claims rules that catch people
A Lebec small claim is heard in Lamont. The court's civil and small claims page offers three ways to file: e-filing through an approved provider, in person at the courthouse where the claim will be heard, or by mail with the original claim, a copy for each defendant and for you, and a self-addressed stamped envelope. An individual can sue for up to $12,500.
Kern's local rules then set a few deadlines of their own:
- Rule 2.2: the plaintiff can have the clerk serve by certified mail, or use personal service by a process server, the sheriff or any adult who isn't a party. The plaintiff may not personally serve the claim.
- Rule 2.3: if no proof of service is on file at least three calendar days before the court date, the clerk removes the case from the calendar and dismisses it without prejudice.
- Rule 2.5: if the claim hasn't been served, the clerk can grant one extension, up to 30 days for an in-county defendant or 60 days for one out of county, on a declaration filed three court days before the date.
The court's Small Claims Advisor is free, first come first served, at (661) 610-6518. Build in time for the proof to reach Lamont, especially if it's going by mail.
E-filing for represented parties
Kern Local Rule 1.10, revised July 1, 2026, makes e-filing mandatory for attorneys in limited and unlimited civil, family law, probate, unlawful detainer and several other case types. Self-represented parties are encouraged to e-file but don't have to. For a Lebec party without a lawyer, the choice is a drive to Lamont, the mail, or our Kern County court filing service. Our post on California court e-filing explains how filing through a provider works.
Lebec evictions
A Lebec landlord files the unlawful detainer at Lamont, or e-files it there. Send us the summons, the complaint and the notice, the names of all adult occupants, and the access details for the unit or parcel. A tenant handed the summons has 10 court days to file an answer, according to the state court self-help page. Papers left with another adult or posted give the tenant more time.
From January 1, 2027, AB 747 sets out how diligence is shown before papers are left with another adult or an eviction summons is posted: good-faith attempts at personal delivery on at least three occasions, on three different days at three different times (CCP §§ 415.20(b)(2) and 415.45). On a rural Lebec parcel, each of those is its own trip. Our AB 747 guide covers the changes, and our proof of service guide shows what the server signs.
Appearing from Lebec without the drive
The courthouses that hear Lebec cases are 28 to 38 miles away in a straight line, so remote appearances matter. Kern Local Rule 1.1.1(a) lets a party appear remotely in any proceeding other than an evidentiary hearing or trial, such as a conference or a law and motion hearing, without advance notice, where CCP § 367.75 allows it. The judge can still require someone to come in person. Evidentiary hearings and trials have their own notice rules, and Local Rule 3.2.1 governs civil, eviction and small claims cases specifically.
Copies from an existing Kern file go through the court's online document request link, which the civil, family and probate pages each point to. If you need certified copies pulled and sent, our document retrieval service can do that step.
Suing the County of Kern
Lebec has no city, so local government claims run against the county or a district. A summons on a public entity can be delivered to its clerk, secretary, president, presiding officer or other head of its governing body (CCP § 416.50). A damages claim to the county usually comes first, on its own deadline, and your attorney handles it. When the lawsuit is ready, confirm the entity's exact name and the right recipient, and send both with the papers.
Filed in the wrong Kern courthouse
Mistakes happen when a case is filed in Bakersfield out of habit. Kern Local Rule 1.7.6 lets a party move to transfer a case to a different division for good cause, after a hearing in the court where it's pending. The rule also lets the judge deny a transfer for a case filed in a court that Rule 1.7.4's ZIP Code table doesn't authorize. Checking Appendix A before filing avoids the motion.
