A single Lakewood case can involve more courthouse addresses than most people expect. Lakewood has no courthouse of its own, so the Los Angeles Superior Court spreads its cases among buildings in Norwalk, Bellflower, Whittier and downtown Los Angeles. Which one you need depends on the case type, and in one corner of the city it depends on the ZIP Code printed on the address.
If you need a process server in Lakewood, the service itself is the simpler half: the papers are served at the Lakewood address, with the request run from Sacramento, about 379 miles north. The filing half is where the four buildings come in, so tell us which one issued the summons and which ZIP Code the address carries.
Lakewood filing courthouses at a glance
We ran Lakewood's three ZIP Code areas through the court's filing court locator on October 29, 2026. 90712, 90713 and 90715 all returned the same list, including the 90712 row the locator labels Mayfair:
| Lakewood case | Filing courthouse | Straight line from central Lakewood |
|---|---|---|
| Small claims | Bellflower Courthouse, 10025 East Flower Street | 2.4 mi |
| Limited unlawful detainer (eviction) | Norwalk Courthouse, 12720 Norwalk Boulevard | 5.5 mi |
| Unlimited civil (over $35,000) | Norwalk Courthouse | 5.5 mi |
| Limited civil, collection | Norwalk Courthouse | 5.5 mi |
| Family law | Whittier Courthouse, 7339 South Painter Avenue | 10.2 mi |
| Restraining orders | Whittier Courthouse | 10.2 mi |
| Probate | Stanley Mosk Courthouse, 111 North Hill Street, Los Angeles | 16.0 mi |
| Limited civil, not a collection | Stanley Mosk Courthouse | 16.0 mi |
So the nearest building, Bellflower, only takes Lakewood small claims. Most landlord and business litigation lands in Norwalk.
The 90805 exception
Lakewood's boundary isn't the same as its ZIP Codes. The Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place file shows small pieces of the city inside ZIP Code areas centered on Long Beach, 90805, 90807 and 90808, plus a sliver of 90703.
The locator treats one of those pieces differently. Under 90805 it lists a community named Lakewood, and for that row:
- Evictions and small claims go to the Governor George Deukmejian Courthouse, 275 Magnolia Avenue, Long Beach, about 6.9 miles from central Lakewood.
- Unlimited civil and collections still go to Norwalk.
- Family law and restraining orders still go to Whittier.
A 90805 row labeled Long Beach sends nearly everything to the Long Beach courthouse, and a row labeled North Long Beach returns Norwalk and Bellflower for evictions and small claims. To check an address yourself, open the court's filing court locator, enter the ZIP Code, and read the row whose community name matches the city on the deed, lease or tax bill rather than the mailing city. If the property is near the Long Beach line and you can't tell which row applies, call the Norwalk civil clerk before you file. Those differences are why we tell clients to run the exact community, not just the ZIP Code, before filing. And before the server takes the papers out, check that the courthouse printed on the summons matches the building where the case was filed.
Evictions: file in Norwalk, serve at the Lakewood unit
Lakewood housing is largely single-family streets, with apartment buildings and duplexes mixed in along the main roads. A limited eviction case from 90712, 90713 or 90715 is filed at Norwalk, where the directory lists the Civil Clerk's Office in Room 101. The office has separate phone lines for general civil, (562) 345-0899, limited collections, (562) 345-0898, and limited unlawful detainer, (562) 345-0897.
For service at a Lakewood rental, the details that help most are:
- Every tenant named on the summons, plus any occupants your attorney wants served with a prejudgment claim of right to possession.
- The unit or back-house address, since some Lakewood lots have a second unit behind the main house with its own door.
- Dogs, gates and side yards. A note that the front door isn't used, or that the gate is locked, saves an attempt.
- The filed papers, with the Norwalk case number, or the Long Beach one for a 90805 address.
From January 1, 2027, the diligence needed before substituted service at a home is shown by attempting personal delivery on at least three occasions, on three different days at three different times (CCP § 415.20(b)(2)). Our AB 747 guide explains the change, and the proof of service guide covers what the signed proof shows.
Small claims in Bellflower, not Downey
If you're working from an old checklist, it may say Lakewood small claims belong in Downey. The court's Appendix 2.B, last revised in 2018, still says that. The live locator returns the Bellflower Courthouse, where the directory lists the small claims clerk on the second floor at (562) 345-3396. The Downey Courthouse directory now shows only criminal and traffic.
Once a Lakewood claim is filed, the defendant must be served at least 15 days before the hearing if they live in Los Angeles County, or at least 20 days if they live outside it (CCP § 116.340). The person suing can't serve the claim. We can, and the server completes form SC-104 afterward.
Papers to serve in Lakewood?
Family law and restraining orders in Whittier
Lakewood family law goes to Whittier, about 10 miles north. The court's directory puts the family law clerk in Room 100 on the first floor, opening at 8:00 a.m., and a Self-Help Resource Center in Room 300. Restraining orders for Lakewood addresses are filed at Whittier too.
A restraining order and its hearing papers have to be personally delivered to the restrained person. The proof is form DV-200 for a domestic violence order and CH-200 for civil harassment. A family law summons is usually proved on FL-115, and the petitioner can't serve it personally. Give us a recent photo, the person's schedule, a workplace if you know it and the hearing date.
Unlimited civil and collections at Norwalk
Unlimited civil cases from Lakewood, over $35,000, are filed at Norwalk under the locator. The court's local rules allow many unlimited cases to be filed in the Central District instead, and require an unlimited personal injury case to be filed in the district where the incident arose. Every new civil case also needs form LACIV 109, the Statement of Location.
Collection cases are where Lakewood is lucky. The court sends limited collection cases under California Rules of Court rule 3.740 to one of two hubs, Chatsworth or Norwalk. Lakewood's rows all go to Norwalk, about 5.5 miles away, rather than the San Fernando Valley. Attorneys must e-file civil cases unless they have an exemption. Our Los Angeles County court filing page explains how we file and serve on one request, and our post on same-day court filing covers rush filings.
Injury cases from a Lakewood incident
Since January 1, 2026, Local Rule 2.3 has required an unlimited personal injury case to be filed in the district where the incident arose. For a collision on a Lakewood street, or a fall at a Lakewood store, the locator's unlimited civil court is Norwalk. The Statement of Location on form LACIV 109 should say so.
Where the case is filed and where the defendant lives are separate questions. A driver involved in a Lakewood crash may live in Orange County or farther away, and the summons is served wherever that person can be found. Tell us every address you have for each defendant, including a workplace. When the defendant is a business, serve its agent for service of process rather than a store manager, and list the business name exactly as the Secretary of State shows it.
A few injury-case details that help the server:
- Driver and owner can be different people. If the complaint names both, each needs a separate set of papers.
- Vehicle information from the collision report can help a server confirm the right home.
- A minor or a person in a care facility may need special handling under the Code of Civil Procedure. Tell us up front so the right person is served.
Probate and limited civil downtown
Probate for a Lakewood estate is filed at Stanley Mosk, 16 miles away in downtown Los Angeles, and so is any limited civil case that isn't a collection or an eviction. Probate citations and notices still get served at Lakewood addresses. Note on the request which documents need filing first and which go straight to the server.
Serving a Lakewood business
Lakewood's businesses cluster along the major boulevards and around its regional shopping center. A manager on duty at a chain store isn't usually the agent for service of process. For a corporation or LLC, look up the agent on bizfile Online and send us the name and address as listed (Corporations Code § 1502). For a sole proprietor, the owner can be served personally at the business or at home.
When the agent is a commercial service, see our pages on CSC and CT Corporation, or the general rules at serving corporations. If the business or person has left Lakewood, skip tracing looks for a current address. Our post on finding a defendant in California lists what to gather first.
