Claremont is the last Los Angeles County city before San Bernardino County begins. Upland, 3.1 miles away, and Montclair, 3.8, are both on the other side of that line, and their cases belong to a different superior court. Claremont's own cases stay in the Los Angeles system, in the court's East District, and they split between two San Gabriel Valley courthouses and one downtown.
This page sets out where each Claremont case type is filed, what the ZIP Code data says about the city's edges, and what helps a server finish a Claremont job. Requests for Claremont are run from our Sacramento office, about 375 miles to the north.
Where Claremont cases are filed
The court's filing court locator has one row for 91711, labeled Claremont. In October 2026 it returned:
| Claremont case | Filing courthouse | Straight line from central Claremont |
|---|---|---|
| Unlimited civil (over $35,000) | Pomona Courthouse South, 400 Civic Center Plaza | 5.2 mi |
| Family law | Pomona Courthouse South | 5.2 mi |
| Restraining orders | Pomona Courthouse South | 5.2 mi |
| Limited unlawful detainer (eviction) | West Covina Courthouse, 1427 West Covina Parkway | 13.5 mi |
| Small claims | West Covina Courthouse | 13.5 mi |
| Limited civil collection | Norwalk Courthouse, 12720 Norwalk Boulevard | 25.1 mi |
| Probate | Stanley Mosk Courthouse, 111 North Hill Street, Los Angeles | 30.9 mi |
| Limited civil that isn't a collection | Stanley Mosk Courthouse | 30.9 mi |
Local Rule 2.2 lists three East District buildings: Pomona Courthouse South, West Covina and El Monte. Claremont uses the first two. El Monte isn't on any Claremont row.
The edges of 91711
The Census Bureau's 2020 relationship files show how closely 91711 matches the city. Claremont covers about 87.6% of the ZIP Code area's land. Almost all of the rest, about 12.4%, isn't in any city at all; it's unincorporated Los Angeles County. A tiny piece, about 2,000 square meters, is in Pomona. The whole ZIP Code area is in Los Angeles County.
Two other ZIP Code areas reach into the city:
- 91750, the La Verne ZIP Code, takes in about 0.1 square kilometers of Claremont. The locator's La Verne row routes exactly like Claremont.
- 91759, the Mount Baldy ZIP Code, takes in about half a square kilometer of the city's northern edge.
None of this changes the courthouse for an address inside the city limits. It matters when a client writes Claremont on a request for a house that turns out to be unincorporated. In that case the County of Los Angeles, not the City of Claremont, is the local government, which can matter for code enforcement or a claim against a public agency.
Mount Baldy and the county line
91759 is the one Claremont ZIP Code area that crosses into San Bernardino County. The county file puts about 79% of its land in Los Angeles County and about 21% in San Bernardino County.
The two courts treat this from opposite sides. The Los Angeles locator labels its only 91759 row "Mount Baldy (LA Co. only)" and sends it to the same courthouses as Claremont. The San Bernardino court's "Where can I file" page lists unincorporated areas of Mt. Baldy among the places one of its locations serves. A mountain address in 91759 can therefore belong to either court, and the ZIP Code alone won't tell you which. Confirm the parcel's county on assessor records before filing.
Mountain addresses also take longer to reach. For cabins above the city, remote areas are subject to different timelines. Tell us about locked gates, private roads and any seasonal access you know about.
Next door in San Bernardino County
Upland and Montclair are separate cities in a separate county. The San Bernardino court's filing page lists both among the areas it serves, so a case that belongs in those cities goes to that court, not to Pomona. Our Montclair page walks through the San Bernardino courthouses, and San Bernardino County court filing explains how we handle filings there.
Serving across the line is routine. A Los Angeles case can be served on a defendant who lives in Upland, and an Upland case can be served on someone who works in Claremont. What the line changes is which court the papers come from and, for small claims, how early they have to be served.
Civil cases and family law at Pomona Courthouse South
Pomona Courthouse South is Claremont's main courthouse. Its directory puts the Civil Unlimited clerk in Room 101 on the first floor, (213) 633-6333, open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Civil ex parte applications have to be filed in that clerk's office at 8:30 a.m. for a 9:00 a.m. hearing in the department. Public parking is in the lot on 7th Street, on the south side of the building.
The family law clerk is in the same room and opens earlier, at 8:00 a.m. Family Court Services mediation is in Room 125, and the Self-Help Center and Family Law Facilitator are in Room 730 on the seventh floor.
Local Rule 2.3 lets many unlimited civil and family cases be filed either in the Central District downtown or in the district the rule describes, such as where a contract was to be performed or where a defendant lives. For a Claremont dispute, that usually means a choice between Pomona, 5 miles away, and Stanley Mosk, 31. Personal injury cases don't get that choice: Local Rule 2.3(a)(1)(A) sends an unlimited injury case to the district where the incident arose. For a crash on a Claremont street, that's the East District and Pomona Courthouse South.
Every new civil case also carries form LACIV 109, the Statement of Location, and a copy goes out with the summons. Upload it with the complaint so the server has the full set.
Papers to serve in Claremont?
Restraining orders for Claremont residents
Claremont domestic violence and civil harassment requests are heard at Pomona Courthouse South. Local Rule 2.3 lets a civil harassment case be filed where one of the parties lives, or in any district needed to keep the requesting party safe, and it treats family law restraining orders the same way. For most Claremont petitioners, that means Pomona.
Once a judge signs a temporary order, the restrained person has to receive the papers before the hearing. The server hands them over and then completes the proof, form DV-200 for a domestic violence case or CH-200 for civil harassment. The protected person can't be the one who serves. Send us the hearing date, a photo, the vehicle the person drives if you know it, and the places they're likely to be at particular hours. If the person lives across the line in Upland or Montclair, the papers can still be served there.
Evictions and small claims in West Covina
Claremont's landlord cases and small claims go west to West Covina, about 13.5 miles. The court's directory lists a single clerk's office for both, Room 107, (626) 430-2596. Eviction ex parte hearings are at 11:00 a.m. in Department 2 on weekdays. The court lists free four-hour parking in designated areas, with some levels reserved for court staff.
A tenant who is handed a Claremont eviction summons has 10 court days to answer. From January 1, 2027, three good-faith attempts at personal delivery, made on three different days at three different times, show the reasonable diligence needed before substituted service under the amended CCP § 415.20(b)(2). Posting an eviction summons is a separate procedure under CCP § 415.45 that needs a court order. Our AB 747 guide covers both.
For small claims, the individual limit is $12,500, and the plaintiff can't serve the claim personally. CCP § 116.340 requires service at least 15 days before the hearing for a defendant inside Los Angeles County and 20 days for one outside it. With Upland and Montclair so close, check where the defendant actually lives before you count.
Collections and probate
A limited collection case from Claremont goes to the Norwalk Courthouse, one of the court's two collection hubs. That's 25 miles from Claremont, but represented parties must e-file civil documents under Local Rule 3.4, so few attorneys file there in person. Self-represented parties are exempt from that rule, though the court encourages them to e-file too. Norwalk's Civil Clerk's Office is in Room 101, with a limited collections line at (562) 345-0898.
Probate goes to Stanley Mosk downtown. Probate notices and citations are still served at Claremont addresses, so tell us which documents need filing first and which go straight to the server.
Serving the City of Claremont
Claremont City Hall is at 207 Harvard Avenue, 91711. To serve the city as a defendant, CCP § 416.50 directs the summons to the clerk, secretary, president, presiding officer or other head of the governing body. Ask for the City Clerk's office, and name the city exactly as the complaint does.
For an individual who works for the city, serve the person, not the department. If a city employee is named both personally and as an official, the request should say so, and your attorney should confirm how many sets of papers to serve.
What helps a Claremont serve
- The exact unit, for apartments and condominiums, and whether the building has a call box.
- A work address and hours, for people who are rarely home during the day.
- A recent photo, especially for a person who shares a house with roommates or family.
- The case number and courthouse, so the server can check them against the summons.
- Gate or access notes for hillside homes, if you have them, including a contact who can open a gate.
If the person has moved and nobody knows where, skip tracing can look for a current address before the first attempt. Our post on finding a defendant in California explains what to gather first.
