Beverly Hills has the most famous ZIP Code in the country, and that ZIP Code is the first thing to be careful with. The Census Bureau places less than half of the 90210 land area inside Beverly Hills. The rest is mostly the City of Los Angeles, and the court's filing locator gives different answers for different parts of it. The city itself is small, about 33,000 people at the 2020 Census, but its addresses and court routing take more checking than most.
So the first question on a Beverly Hills request isn't the distance from Sacramento, about 357 miles, but whether the address is really in the city. A 90210 address in Beverly Crest is in Los Angeles, and the locator's row for it sends evictions to Van Nuys East and small claims to Stanley Mosk. Send the full street address and we serve the papers there either way.
Where Beverly Hills cases are filed
We ran each Beverly Hills ZIP Code through the Los Angeles Superior Court's filing court locator on October 29, 2026. For the rows labeled Beverly Hills in 90210, 90211 and 90212, the results matched:
| Beverly Hills case | Filing courthouse | Straight line from central Beverly Hills |
|---|---|---|
| Small claims | Beverly Hills Courthouse, 9355 Burton Way | 0.6 mi |
| Unlimited civil (over $35,000) | Beverly Hills Courthouse or Santa Monica Courthouse | 0.6 or 6.9 mi |
| Limited unlawful detainer (eviction) | Santa Monica Courthouse, 1725 Main Street | 6.9 mi |
| Restraining orders | Santa Monica Courthouse | 6.9 mi |
| Family law | Stanley Mosk Courthouse, 111 North Hill Street, Los Angeles | 9.1 mi |
| Probate | Stanley Mosk Courthouse | 9.1 mi |
| Limited civil, not a collection | Stanley Mosk Courthouse | 9.1 mi |
| Limited civil, collection | Chatsworth Courthouse, 9425 Penfield Avenue | 14.7 mi |
The courthouse in town handles small claims and shares unlimited civil with Santa Monica. The locator doesn't say how unlimited cases are divided between the two. Local Rule 2.3 sets the criteria, and the clerk can confirm for an unusual case.
Three answers inside 90210
90210 isn't one row in the locator. It's three:
- Beverly Hills. Small claims at Beverly Hills, evictions and restraining orders at Santa Monica, as in the table.
- Trousdale Estates. Unlimited civil, family law and probate match the Beverly Hills row, but evictions and small claims go to Van Nuys Courthouse East, 6230 Sylmar Avenue, about 7.6 miles north over the hills.
- Los Angeles/Beverly Crest. Evictions go to Van Nuys East, and small claims go to Stanley Mosk downtown.
The Census numbers explain why the court splits it. About 38% of the 90210 land area is in Beverly Hills and about 60% is in the City of Los Angeles, mostly the canyon and ridge neighborhoods. From the city's side, 90210 holds about 71% of Beverly Hills land, 90212 about 17% and 90211 about 12%. Those last two are essentially all Beverly Hills.
So the practical rule: for a 90210 address, pick the community row that matches the street, not the mailing label. If you're not sure which one applies, call the clerk before filing. The court is renumbering departments at several courthouses starting November 2, 2026, so check the department on any notice.
Beverly Hills evictions in Santa Monica
A limited eviction case from a Beverly Hills row is filed at the Santa Monica Courthouse, where the directory lists the Civil Clerk's Office on the first floor in Room 102. Apartment buildings in the flats often have a locked lobby or a garage gate.
What the server needs for a Beverly Hills unit:
- Every tenant named on the summons, in the same spelling.
- The building entrance and the unit, plus the name on the call box if it differs.
- Garage, gate or doorman details, and whether a building manager will let a server reach the unit door.
- The filed papers showing the Santa Monica case number, or Van Nuys East for a Trousdale Estates or Beverly Crest row.
From January 1, 2027, the diligence that comes before leaving papers with another adult at the home is shown by attempting personal delivery on at least three occasions, on three different days at three different times (CCP § 415.20(b)(2)). Our AB 747 guide explains the details.
Hillside homes, gates and household staff
North of Sunset Boulevard, Beverly Hills streets climb into the hills, and houses often sit behind a gate with an intercom. The server can't climb a fence or force a gate. What usually works is a combination of timing and detail:
- Gate and intercom notes. Say whether there's a call box at the street, a side pedestrian gate, or a separate service entrance.
- The person's schedule. When they leave, when they're home, and where they work.
- Who else answers. If a housekeeper, a caretaker or a security guard usually answers the intercom, tell us. Whether papers left with that person count as substituted service is a legal question under CCP § 415.20, and from 2027 the three-occasion diligence showing comes first.
- Vehicles. A plate or a description can confirm the person is home.
A signed proof only helps if it's accurate, so the server records each attempt, who answered and what was said. Our proof of service guide shows what goes into it. We make no guarantees for service.
Papers to serve in Beverly Hills?
Small claims at Burton Way
A Beverly Hills small claims case, from a Beverly Hills row, is filed and heard at the Beverly Hills Courthouse. The directory lists a separate small claims line, (310) 281-2496, and the court charges for parking in its lot, with metered street parking nearby.
The claim has to reach the defendant at least 15 days before the hearing when the defendant lives in Los Angeles County, and at least 20 days before when they live outside it (CCP § 116.340). The plaintiff can't serve it. We can, and the server completes form SC-104.
Divorce, probate and restraining orders
Beverly Hills family law is filed downtown at Stanley Mosk, where the family law filing window is in Room 426 on the fourth floor. Probate is filed at Stanley Mosk too. Restraining orders take a different path and go to Santa Monica for every Beverly Hills row.
For a restraining order, the papers must be handed to the restrained person, and the proof is form DV-200 or CH-200. For a family law summons, the proof is usually form FL-115. With a high-profile or hard-to-reach respondent, send a photo, the hearing date and any known workplace, and tell us if there's a security team or a gatehouse.
Guests at a Beverly Hills hotel
Sometimes the only Beverly Hills address you have is a hotel where the person is staying. Hotels generally won't give out a guest's room number or send a server upstairs, and front desk staff can't accept papers for a guest. That leaves a few practical routes:
- A known arrival or departure time, so the server can wait in a public area.
- A meeting, event or restaurant reservation the person is expected to attend.
- A photo, since the server has to identify the person in a busy lobby.
- A home address elsewhere, which is often the better place to serve.
Tell us the check-out date if you know it. A hotel stay has a deadline built in, and Rush may make sense.
Collections and other limited civil cases
Limited civil cases, $35,000 or less, split two ways for Beverly Hills. A collection case under California Rules of Court rule 3.740 is filed at the Chatsworth Courthouse, 14.7 miles away at the far end of the San Fernando Valley. Any other limited civil case goes to Stanley Mosk downtown. Both are served at the Beverly Hills address like any other case, so the main thing to check is that the summons names the right building.
Businesses, offices and professional firms
Beverly Hills has a dense commercial core of retail shops, medical offices and professional firms, many in multi-tenant buildings with a lobby desk. The receptionist at a suite usually isn't authorized to accept service for the company. For a corporation or LLC, look up the agent for service of process on bizfile Online and send us that name and address. If no agent can be found, CCP § 416.10 allows service on certain officers.
Many Beverly Hills companies name a commercial agent. Our pages on CSC and CT Corporation cover the two largest, and serving corporations covers the rest. For a records subpoena to a medical office or a business, see our post on serving a subpoena in California.
Filing for a Beverly Hills case
Attorneys must e-file Los Angeles civil cases unless they have an exemption, under the court's civil e-filing FAQ. Every new civil filing needs form LACIV 109, the Statement of Location. We file at the counter or by e-filing and serve on one request. Our Los Angeles County court filing page has the details.
