Ridgecrest is an eastern Kern County city next to Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake. Valpro Attorney Services serves legal papers there: summonses and complaints, small claims, family law petitions and orders, subpoenas, eviction notices and unlawful detainer summonses. We also file Ridgecrest cases with Kern County Superior Court, at the branch or electronically.
The city is about 295 miles straight-line from our Sacramento office. Send a Service Request online with up to 5 PDFs, or email the papers to Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com. For a tight hearing date, call 855-582-5776 first.
The Ridgecrest branch on Coso Avenue
Kern County Superior Court's Ridgecrest branch is at 132 E Coso Ave, Ridgecrest, CA 93555, phone (661) 610-7450. The court's directions say the complex is on the south side of the street and can be seen from the signal on North China Lake Boulevard. It's about a third of a mile from the city's Census center point.
The court's hours there are:
- Monday through Thursday: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
- Friday: 8:00 a.m. to noon
Ridgecrest shows up on both the civil and small claims page and the family law page as one of six Kern locations, alongside the Metro Justice Building in Bakersfield and the Delano, Lamont, Mojave and Shafter branches. The local rules call it the East Division.

What stays in Ridgecrest and what goes to Bakersfield
Kern doesn't let you pick a courthouse by convenience. Local Rule 1.7.4 sets venue by ZIP Code, and Rule 1.7.5 lists the matters that must be filed in the Metropolitan Division in Bakersfield. Put together, a Ridgecrest-area case sorts like this:
| Matter | Where it's filed |
|---|---|
| Limited civil, up to $35,000 | Ridgecrest branch |
| Unlimited civil, over $35,000 | Metropolitan Division, 1215 Truxtun Ave, Bakersfield (Rule 1.7.5(b)) |
| Quiet title on Ridgecrest-area property | Either; the rule lets these be filed in the branch |
| Small claims | The courthouse where the claim will be heard |
| Family law petitions | By the petitioner's ZIP Code (Rule 1.7.5(g)(1)) |
| DCSS child support | Ridgecrest, for Ridgecrest-venue ZIP Codes (Rule 1.7.5(e)) |
| Adoption and abandonment | Bakersfield (Rule 1.7.5(g)(4)) |
| Probate and guardianship | Juvenile Justice Center, 2100 College Ave, Bakersfield (Rule 1.7.5(m)) |
The Bakersfield Justice Building is about 78 miles west of Ridgecrest in a straight line. A family law case filed there can come back east: Rule 1.7.5(g)(2) moves it to the Ridgecrest branch on a noticed motion when both parties live in the Ridgecrest venue and at least one is represented by an attorney with an office in the East Kern venue, unless the court finds East Kern an inconvenient forum.
A new family law petition needs the court's Family Law Case Certificate of Assignment, form KRN SUP CRT FL-2427, with the first filing.

The Ridgecrest venue reaches into the mountains
The court's venue table assigns far more than the city to this branch. Communities sent to Ridgecrest include:
- Around Ridgecrest: Ridgecrest, China Lake NWC, China Lake Acres, Inyokern, Indian Wells and Pearsonville.
- Other desert towns: Randsburg, Johannesburg and Red Mountain.
- Kern River Valley: Lake Isabella, Kernville, Wofford Heights, Weldon, Onyx, Bodfish, Mountain Mesa and Southlake.
Places like California City, Boron, Edwards AFB and Tehachapi go to the Mojave branch instead. So a landlord in Kernville files an eviction in Ridgecrest, while one in California City files in Mojave. Check the table against the property or defendant's ZIP Code before filing.
Many of those addresses are far from town and from each other, in the mountains or out in open desert. Remote areas are subject to different timelines, so call 855-582-5776 before you choose Rush for one of them.

Small claims at the Ridgecrest branch
The court's small claims section caps an individual's claim at $12,500, and only two claims over $2,500 may be filed per calendar year. A claim can be filed in person at the courthouse where it will be heard, by mail, or through an e-filing service provider.
Two practical notes from that page:
- By mail. Send the original Plaintiff's Claim and Order, one copy for each defendant and one for you, plus a self-addressed stamped envelope so the clerk can mail copies back.
- In person. The court asks people opening a new small claims case to arrive no less than 30 minutes before the counter closes. On a Friday, that means by 11:30 a.m.
Kern's small claims local rules help when service runs late. Rule 2.5 allows one clerk-granted extension when the claim hasn't been served: up to 30 days for an in-county defendant and 60 days for one outside the county, on a declaration filed three court days before the court date. Rule 2.4 allows a single postponement of up to 15 days after service, with a written request and fee at least five court days before trial.

Papers to serve in Ridgecrest?
E-filing and remote hearings
The court's e-filing page says represented parties will be required to e-file in limited and unlimited civil, family law, probate and unlawful detainer cases, and self-represented litigants aren't required to. A document received electronically by 11:59:59 p.m. on a court day counts as received that day, which can save a Ridgecrest filer from a Friday noon closing.
For remote appearances, the court asks you to pick the courtroom on its Remote Hearings page and join 30 minutes early so the clerk can check you in. Family law and probate exhibits go by email five court days before the hearing, to FamilyLawExhibits@kern.courts.ca.gov or ProbateExhibits@kern.courts.ca.gov, and must be sent again if the hearing is continued. Recording a remote hearing is prohibited without a court order.
See Kern County court filing for how we handle a filing there.

Serving a new Ridgecrest civil case
Kern assigns each new case to one judicial officer for all purposes. Local Rule 3.3(a) says the plaintiff receives a Notice of Case Assignment at filing, and a copy of it must be served on the parties with the case-initiating documents. The rule treats that assignment as one for all purposes under Code of Civil Procedure § 170.6(a)(2).
Put the notice in the same PDF set as the summons and complaint, and we serve them together. The proof of service should list it among the documents served.

Copies from a Ridgecrest case file
Kern doesn't post case documents online. Its court records page lets you read the summary list of filings through the civil case information search, and to see the papers themselves you either view the file at the courthouse or mail a request for copies. Requests for small claims, limited, unlimited and eviction case documents can also go through the court's online document request link.
The fees on that page, payable to Kern County Superior Court:
- 50 cents per page for copies.
- $40 plus 50 cents per page for a certified copy of an order.
- $15 for a certified Judgment of Dissolution.
A mailed request needs the party names, a check and a stamped return envelope. The page warns it may take at least 10 working days, and the court won't look up a case number or give case information by phone. For anything faster, send the case number with a document retrieval request.

Help that sits in Bakersfield
The court's Self-Help Center is in Bakersfield, at 1215 Truxtun Ave, 1st floor, on the same Monday to Thursday and Friday-morning schedule. It helps with guardianship, dissolution, custody, small claims and related forms. Two other resources work by phone or email from anywhere in the county:
- Landlord/Tenant Assistance Center: (661) 610-6299 or LTAC@kern.courts.ca.gov, for unlawful detainer questions.
- Kern County Law Library: (661) 610-6325, for civil harassment and how to start or answer a civil action.

Ridgecrest and China Lake
The Department of Defense's Military OneSource profile describes Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake as the Navy's largest single landholding, with stewardship of about 1.1 million acres. It reports about 620 military personnel, 4,166 full-time civilians and 1,734 on-board contractors as of March 2025. The same profile says the community area of China Lake was annexed by the City of Ridgecrest in 1982, and its directions place the Main Gate where China Lake Boulevard meets Inyokern Road.
For service, that means many people in Ridgecrest work on the station, and some live in station housing. A workplace behind a gate isn't the same as a front door in town. When you can, give us a home address off base, the person's usual hours, and a vehicle description.

Ridgecrest ZIP Codes and the county line
The 93555 ZIP Code area covers about 78 square miles of land, about 19 of them inside city limits. It also includes the unincorporated Census places of China Lake Acres and Ridgecrest Heights, and a small piece of Inyokern.
Ridgecrest is close to the San Bernardino County line, and some addresses carry a Ridgecrest mailing address on the other side of it. The San Bernardino court sends small claims, limited landlord-tenant and family law from that portion of Ridgecrest to its Barstow District, so confirm the county before you file.
