Oakdale is a city in eastern Stanislaus County with 23,181 residents in the 2020 Census and a Census Bureau estimate of 23,246 for July 1, 2025. The county court's own local rules list it among the cities the court serves, along with nearby unincorporated communities such as Knights Ferry and Valley Home. We serve summonses, small claims, eviction papers, family law petitions, subpoenas and restraining order papers at Oakdale homes and businesses and on the rural parcels around the city.
Oakdale requests are handled from our Sacramento office, about 68.6 miles north in a straight line. Upload the papers on a Service Request, email Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com, or call 855-582-5776 with questions.
No courthouse in Oakdale
The Superior Court of California, County of Stanislaus, has no courthouse in Oakdale. Every Oakdale case heads to Modesto or Turlock, and which one depends on the case type:
| Oakdale matter | Courthouse | Straight-line distance from Oakdale |
|---|---|---|
| Civil lawsuits, civil harassment, name changes | City Towers Courthouse, 801 10th Street, Modesto; Civil Clerk's Office on the 4th floor | About 12 miles |
| Probate estates, trusts and conservatorships | City Towers Courthouse, Civil and Probate Division | About 12 miles |
| Family law, child support, guardianships, adoptions | Main Courthouse, 800 11th Street, Modesto; clerk at the I Street entrance | About 12 miles |
| Small claims and unlawful detainer | Turlock Division, 300 Starr Avenue, Turlock, Department 19 | About 18 miles |
Every location lists hours of 8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and the main phone line is (209) 530-3100. Mail for the court goes to P.O. Box 1098, Modesto, CA 95353. Source: Stanislaus County Superior Court locations and contact page, checked October 2026.
The point to remember is the split between civil and evictions. An Oakdale landlord doesn't file at City Towers. The unlawful detainer goes south to Turlock, even though Turlock is farther from Oakdale than Modesto is.
Filing an Oakdale eviction in Turlock
Stanislaus Local Rule 3.03 adds steps to an unlawful detainer that don't exist in every county:
- Local form CV011. When the complaint is filed, the plaintiff files the court's Notice of Review re: Court's Motion to Dismiss along with it.
- The notice's proof of service. Parties may file a copy of the proof of service of the 3-, 30- or 60-day notice, but the original stays with the party under California Rules of Court, rule 2.257(b).
- Trial setting. A case is set for trial by filing Judicial Council form UD-150. Short cause cases go on the 8:30 a.m. unlawful detainer calendar, and nonjury trials are set no more than 20 days after the request is filed.
- Ex parte requests. Other than a stay of eviction or a motion to set aside a default, the party contacts the assigned department to get a hearing, and files moving papers by 2:00 p.m. the court day before.
Once the summons issues, send it with the complaint and we serve the tenant at the Oakdale unit. After personal service, a tenant has 10 court days to file an Answer, according to the California Courts self-help guide. If the tenant can't be found, a landlord can ask the court for permission to post under CCP § 415.45. Source: Stanislaus County Superior Court Local Rules, effective July 1, 2026.
E-filing under Local Rule 1.14
Stanislaus requires e-filing for represented parties. Local Rule 1.14, last amended January 1, 2026, makes it mandatory for every document in civil (limited, unlimited and complex), family, juvenile and probate cases, and in mental health cases for LPS conservatorships and CARE Act proceedings. Self-represented parties may e-file but aren't required to.
Points from the rule that matter for an Oakdale case:
- Exemptions are by request. A party who would face undue hardship or significant prejudice files Judicial Council forms EFS-007 and EFS-008.
- Courtesy copies. The court may order them, but the clerk's office rejects unsolicited ones.
- Papers handed up at trial. A party can give pleadings to the courtroom clerk during trial, as long as they are e-filed by the close of business the next court day.
- Bookmarks. E-filed documents must be text-searchable and bookmarked by heading, subheading, exhibit and attachment. A noncompliant document may be stricken, the hearing continued, or sanctions imposed.
The court's e-filing page lists what can't go in electronically. In civil matters, that includes subpoenas, writs, bonds, abstracts of judgment and exhibits. Those go to the counter. Our Stanislaus County court filing service handles both sides, and our post on California court e-filing explains providers.
The court has also posted proposed local rules to take effect January 1, 2027, with public comments taken from October 1 through November 15, 2026. Check the final version before you rely on a rule number next year.
Papers to serve in Oakdale?
Free help for Oakdale residents doing it themselves
The court's small claims page says litigants may not be represented by an attorney, and the court's Self-Help Center exists for people representing themselves in family, landlord-tenant and other cases. The court offers two kinds of free help, both in Modesto rather than Turlock.
The Self-Help Center is at the Main Courthouse, 800 11th Street, Room 220. It is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., and helps walk-ins first come, first served. Its list covers custody and support, divorce, restraining orders, guardianships, conservatorships, landlord-tenant cases, small claims and name changes. Voicemail is (209) 548-6237. An emergency filing drop box takes documents after normal business hours.
The Small Claims Advisor explains the small claims rules and forms, how to prepare for court and how to collect a judgment, and can refer people to an attorney or other agencies. The advisor can't act as anyone's lawyer or predict who will win. For legal advice, the court's advisor page lists the Stanislaus County Bar Association's lawyer referral service at (209) 571-5727, with a $60 fee for a 30-minute consultation. It also notes that the Department of Consumer Affairs booklet on using small claims court can be read at the county library's reference desk, 1500 I Street, Modesto.
The court won't confirm personal details about a party, such as an address or date of birth, by phone or email. To find a defendant's address, use a court computer at the courthouse, the court's research request form, or our skip tracing service. Small claims service for a Turlock hearing
Small claims cases from Oakdale are filed and heard at the Turlock Division. The court's service information page says the plaintiff can't serve the claim personally. It lists three ways: the sheriff, certified mail sent by the clerk for a fee, or personal or substituted service by anyone over 18 who isn't involved in the case.
The deadlines are set by method and by where the defendant lives:
| Method | Defendant lives in Stanislaus County | Defendant lives outside the county |
|---|---|---|
| Personal service | At least 15 days before trial | At least 20 days before trial |
| Substituted service | At least 25 days before trial | At least 30 days before trial |
If service misses those dates, the court says the trial will be postponed. The proof of service has to show who served, what was served, when and how, and it goes to the small claims clerk at least five days before trial. For certified mail, the court suggests checking back before the hearing to see whether the receipt came back. Our proof of service guide explains the form.
Mediation is free for Stanislaus County residents and businesses, before filing, after filing or on the trial day, in English and Spanish.
The 95361 ZIP Code area reaches two counties
The Census Bureau's 2020 relationship files put all of Oakdale inside one ZIP Code area, 95361. The city is a small piece of it: about 16 square kilometers of land, against about 563 for the whole ZIP Code area. The rest is unincorporated:
- East Oakdale, Knights Ferry, Orange Blossom and Valley Home are census designated places that sit entirely inside 95361. They are Stanislaus County land with no city government.
- About 13 square kilometers of 95361's land lies across the line in San Joaquin County, according to the Census ZCTA-to-county file.
A San Joaquin County address can still read "Oakdale, CA 95361." That changes two things. A case venued in San Joaquin County belongs to San Joaquin Superior Court, not Stanislaus. And in a Stanislaus small claims case, a defendant living on that side is outside the county, so the longer deadlines in the table above apply. ZIP Code areas are Census approximations of postal ZIP Codes.
Rural addresses outside the city
Much of 95361 is unincorporated land. For a rural address, send:
- The endorsed papers. Summons and complaint, or the small claims Plaintiff's Claim with the Turlock trial date.
- Directions. The road, the nearest cross road, and the gate or mailbox name.
- Access. Locked gates, livestock, dogs, or a long private drive.
- A second address. A job site in Oakdale, Modesto or Riverbank gives the server another chance.
- Your deadline. For small claims, count back from the trial date using the table above.
Pick Rush or Standard when you submit. Each request gets a confirmation email, and every update comes in that thread. If an attempt turns up a vacant house or a new tenant, our skip tracing service can look for a current address.
Substituted service from 2027
On January 1, 2027, AB 747 rewrites CCP § 415.20. Reasonable diligence before substituted service is shown by good-faith attempts at personal delivery on at least three occasions, on three different days, at three different times. Substituted service can't use a U.S. Postal Service post office box as the mailing address. Our AB 747 guide covers the rest. This is general information, not legal advice.
Serving an Oakdale business
Find the company's agent for service of process with the California Secretary of State. For a local business, that may be the owner at an Oakdale address, or a registered agent firm elsewhere in the state. See our guide to serving corporations. The Stanislaus small claims page also reminds plaintiffs who do business under a fictitious business name to file form SC-103 with the claim.
