La Habra sits on Orange County's northern edge, and its one ZIP Code crosses the county line. So for a La Habra address, a paralegal has to confirm the county, not just the courthouse, before filing. On the Orange County side, the answer is simple: civil, eviction and small claims cases from La Habra are filed in Santa Ana. On the Los Angeles County side, which is mostly La Habra Heights, a different superior court with a different set of buildings takes the case.
We serve summonses, subpoenas and every other legal document at La Habra homes and businesses, and we file at the right courthouse in either county. Send a Service Request or email Service@ValproAttorneyServices.com.
La Habra's courthouses under the designation list
The Superior Court of Orange County doesn't route cases by ZIP Code. It publishes a Court Designation List, effective June 30, 2025 under Local Rule 365, that assigns each case type to a justice center by city. La Habra's row reads as follows. Distances are straight-line from La Habra's Census center point.
| La Habra case | Justice center | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| Limited and unlimited civil | Central Justice Center, 700 Civic Center Drive West, Santa Ana | 13.0 mi |
| Small claims | Central Justice Center | 13.0 mi |
| Unlawful detainer | Central Justice Center | 13.0 mi |
| Probate and mental health | Costa Mesa Justice Complex, 3390 Harbor Blvd., Costa Mesa | 16.2 mi |
| Family law and juvenile | Lamoreaux Justice Center, 341 The City Drive South, Orange | 10.5 mi |
| Criminal and traffic | North Justice Center, 1275 North Berkeley Ave., Fullerton | 3.5 mi |
The list also notes that civil and probate actions must be e-filed, and that complex civil cases are heard at the Civil Complex Center, 751 West Santa Ana Boulevard.
The Fullerton courthouse is for criminal and traffic
The closest courthouse to La Habra is the North Justice Center in Fullerton, about 3.5 miles south. The court's page for it names La Habra among the eight cities it serves, along with Anaheim, Brea, Buena Park, Fullerton, La Palma, Placentia and Yorba Linda.
That service is for criminal and traffic matters. The page says the building handles traffic, minor offenses and criminal cases, "as well as some civil proceedings," but it lists civil hours as available at the Central Justice Center only, and gives the Santa Ana address as the civil mailing address. So a La Habra lawsuit is filed in Santa Ana, even if a hearing is later set elsewhere. The page also notes the building is a full security facility, where everyone passes through weapons screening.
A North Justice Center address may still appear on papers you need served, such as a subpoena for a witness in a La Habra criminal case. Send the subpoena with the department and appearance date, and we'll plan the attempts around it.
When 90631 is in Los Angeles County
The Census Bureau's 2020 relationship files show how unusual La Habra's ZIP Code is. All of La Habra lies inside 90631. But that ZIP Code's land divides like this:
- About 54% is La Habra, in Orange County.
- About 44% is La Habra Heights, a separate city in Los Angeles County.
- The remaining sliver touches Rowland Heights, Hacienda Heights, Fullerton and unincorporated land.
By county, about 54.3% of the ZIP's land is in Orange County and about 45.7% in Los Angeles County. A mailing address reading "La Habra, CA 90631" might therefore belong to either superior court.
For a La Habra Heights property, the Los Angeles court's Filing Court Locator sent cases elsewhere when we checked on October 29, 2026. Unlimited civil, collection and eviction cases went to the Norwalk Courthouse. Family law and restraining orders went to the Whittier Courthouse, small claims to the Bellflower Courthouse, and probate to Stanley Mosk downtown. Before you file, check the property's county on its tax bill or assessor record. Service itself isn't affected: the server goes to the street address either way.
Filing a La Habra civil case in Santa Ana
The court's civil filing page sets the dividing line at $35,000. A dispute at or under that amount is a limited civil case, and anything above it, or a case that doesn't involve money, is unlimited. Both are filed at the Central Justice Center.
How the papers get there depends on who's filing. Under Local Rule 352 and the state e-filing rules, documents filed by represented parties in limited, unlimited and complex civil cases must be filed electronically, unless the court excuses them. Self-represented parties may file in person at the Civil Clerk's Division on the first floor, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. In-person fee payments are taken only at the civil clerk's offices in that building.
We file La Habra cases by eFiling or at the counter, as the case allows, then send the same request out for service once the summons issues. Our Orange County court filing page covers the details.
Papers to serve in La Habra?
Small claims for La Habra disputes
Every Orange County small claims filing is processed at the Central Justice Center, and La Habra hearings are held there too. The court's small claims guide sets the service deadlines by method:
| Method | Deadline before the court date |
|---|---|
| Personal service, defendant in Orange County | 15 days |
| Personal service, defendant outside the county | 20 days |
| Substituted service, defendant in Orange County | 25 days |
| Substituted service, defendant outside the county | 30 days |
The La Habra Heights side of 90631 matters here too. A defendant who lives there is outside Orange County, so the longer deadlines apply to an Orange County claim.
The guide also explains a third option: the clerk can serve the claim by certified mail for a fee, filed with form L-1091. It calls this the least dependable method, since the defendant can refuse the letter or not be there to sign for it. The person suing can't serve the claim personally. Someone 18 or older who isn't part of the case, the Orange County Sheriff, or a process server can.
The same court sets the dollar limits on its self-help page. A person or sole proprietor can ask for up to $12,500, and a corporation, partnership or other entity up to $6,250. Anyone can file as many claims of $2,500 or less as they like in a calendar year, but only two claims a year that ask for more than $2,500. The page adds that 22% of parties starting or answering a small claims case there choose to e-file.
For in-person help, the Central Justice Center's self-help service runs Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Friday until 3:00 p.m. Document review stops an hour earlier each day.
La Habra evictions and occupants not named
La Habra unlawful detainers are filed at the Central Justice Center. The court's landlord guide covers a detail that changes who can serve the papers. If people may be living in the unit who weren't named in the complaint, the landlord can serve a blank Prejudgment Claim of Right to Possession along with the summons and complaint. Unnamed occupants then have 10 days to file the claim and join the case. If they don't, the judgment applies to them.
The guide says that form has to be served by a registered process server or the Sheriff. It also tells landlords to provide enough copies for each defendant, plus 3 extra copies of the summons, complaint and blank claim form for service on unnamed occupants.
The guide also describes how personal service works in practice. A defendant can't defeat it by refusing to take the papers: the server states that they're a process server, tells the person they're being served, and leaves the papers as close to them as possible. If personal service fails after repeated tries, substituted service is complete 10 days after the papers are mailed.
After service, the tenant's answer window is short. The Judicial Council's eviction guide gives a tenant who is handed the papers 10 court days to answer, not counting weekends or court holidays. After substituted service or court-approved posting, followed by mailing, it's 10 calendar days plus 10 court days from the mailing.
For a La Habra eviction, send us each defendant's name as the summons spells it, the unit number, any gate code, and whether a prejudgment claim of right to possession is included, since that form has its own server requirement.
Family law and probate
La Habra divorce, custody, support and domestic violence cases are heard at the Lamoreaux Justice Center in Orange, about 10.5 miles away. A family law summons served on a La Habra spouse is usually proved on Judicial Council form FL-115. A domestic violence restraining order has to be handed to the restrained person, and the server signs form DV-200. For a restraining order, tell us the hearing date first, then send a photo, the person's vehicle and the places they usually go during the week.
Probate, mental health matters and elder or dependent adult abuse restraining orders go to the Costa Mesa Justice Complex, about 16 miles away. A probate notice is served on each interested person wherever they live. An estate with heirs in Los Angeles County, including La Habra Heights, can go on one request.
Serving a La Habra business
For a corporation, LLC or limited partnership, look up the agent for service of process on the Secretary of State's business search, and send us the name and address exactly as listed. The Orange County small claims guide also points to the Judicial Council's form SC-104C for the rules on serving a business or public entity. If the agent can't be found, an officer of a corporation can be served instead. Our serving corporations guide covers registered agent companies and the other fallbacks.
What to send with a La Habra request
These details give the server a better first visit:
- The full address, and whether it's in La Habra or La Habra Heights.
- The unit or suite number, plus any gate code or building letter.
- When the person is usually there, such as work hours.
- A second address, like a workplace.
- A photo or description, and a vehicle and plate if you have them.
- The court date, so service lands before the deadline that applies.
If the person has moved, skip tracing searches for a current address, and you approve it before we go back out. The updates come to you by email. We make no guarantees for service. The proof of service guide explains what you'll get back.
