Lennox looks like part of the city around it, but it isn't a city. It's an unincorporated community governed by Los Angeles County, counted by the Census Bureau as a census designated place. The 2020 Census found 20,323 people there, on about 1.1 square miles of land, which is roughly 18,600 residents per square mile.

That status shapes the work of a process server in Lennox, CA in two ways. On the court side, Lennox cases go where the Los Angeles Superior Court's ZIP Code tables send them, mostly to Inglewood. On the property side, county ordinances, not city ones, govern Lennox rentals, and that changes what an eviction case looks like before the papers ever reach us.

Who governs a 90304 address

All of Lennox lies inside ZIP Code tabulation area 90304, and Lennox makes up about two-thirds of that ZIP Code's land. The rest is split among other governments. By the Census Bureau's 2020 ZCTA to place file, about 14% of 90304's land is in Inglewood, about 11% in Hawthorne, about 8% in the Del Aire census place and a fraction of a percent in the City of Los Angeles.

So a 90304 address could be in Lennox, in one of two neighboring cities, or in another unincorporated area. For deciding which courthouse takes the case, that doesn't matter much; the court's locator routed the Lennox and Inglewood entries for 90304 to identical buildings. For deciding which local rules apply to a rental, it matters a great deal. The county's Department of Consumer and Business Affairs points property owners to the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk's District Map Look Up By Address to confirm whether a property is unincorporated.

County tenant rules and Lennox evictions

Because Lennox is unincorporated, the county's rental laws reach it. The Department of Consumer and Business Affairs describes three programs that touch an eviction case:

  • The Rent Stabilization and Tenant Protections Ordinance limits annual rent increases on rent-stabilized units and protects tenants in covered residential units from eviction without a just cause. The department sorts the allowed reasons into at-fault and no-fault categories.
  • The Tenant Right to Counsel Program provides free legal services to eligible tenants in unincorporated areas during unlawful detainer proceedings.
  • The Rent Escrow Account Program is an enforcement tool for habitability standards in unincorporated rental housing.

A separate county ordinance covers mobilehome space rents. For a landlord, the practical point is to confirm coverage and the eviction reason before the notice goes out, because a defective notice can undo a case that was served perfectly. For a tenant's lawyer, the right-to-counsel program may already be involved by the time papers are served. This is general information, not legal advice.

Del Aire and the other county pockets

Lennox isn't the only unincorporated land in 90304. The Del Aire census designated place takes up about 8% of the ZIP Code's land, and census designated places are, by the Census Bureau's definition, communities without their own city government. A rental in Del Aire may therefore fall under the same county programs as one in Lennox, while a rental a few blocks away inside Inglewood or Hawthorne falls under that city's rules instead.

When a landlord's file lists only "Inglewood, CA 90304" or "Hawthorne, CA 90304," don't assume the city name on the mailing address is the government that regulates the unit. Run the address through the county's district lookup first. It takes a minute and can save a notice.

Inglewood and Torrance both belong to the court's Southwest District under local rule 2.2.

The Regent Street counter

Most Lennox filings start on the 2nd floor of the Inglewood Courthouse. The court's directory puts the civil clerk's office in Room 202, with phone lines (310) 419-1396 and (310) 419-1397, staffed 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The restraining order desk shares Room 202 and the 419-1397 line, and the small claims clerk answers at 419-1396. The building opens at 8 a.m.; public parking is in the east garage for a fee.

Evictions there are mandatory filings. Under local rule 2.3(a)(2), a limited unlawful detainer has to be filed at the courthouse the court's appendix assigns to the property's community and ZIP Code, determined in three steps: the community that sets venue, the ZIP Code the Postal Service assigns to that location, then the courthouse in the chart. For a Lennox rental, every step lands on Regent Street.

Once a Lennox tenant is personally served, the answer is due in 10 court days. When papers are left with another adult and mailed, the Judicial Council's guide adds 10 calendar days first. Give us the unit number and the names of every adult occupant you know of.

Small claims and what comes after judgment

Small claims cases from Lennox are filed at the Inglewood Courthouse, where the court's directory lists a small claims clerk at (310) 419-1396. The same directory entry lists a Small Claims Advisor run by the County of Los Angeles at (213) 974-9759, which can answer questions about filing and service. A defendant in Los Angeles County must be served at least 15 days before the hearing; one in another county, at least 20 days.

Winning is only part of it. If a judgment isn't paid, a creditor can ask the court to require the debtor to appear for an examination about their income and property, and the court's order to appear has to be personally served on the debtor at least 10 days before the examination date. If you're at the examination stage, upload the signed order and tell us the hearing date.

Unlimited civil: Inglewood or Torrance

For larger cases the locator names two buildings. It lists both the Inglewood and Torrance courthouses for unlimited civil from 90304 and doesn't explain the split, so we'd confirm with the Inglewood civil clerk which one takes a given case type before filing.

The local rules add two constraints. A personal injury case, defined in rule 2.3(a)(1)(A) as an unlimited action for bodily injury, wrongful death or damage to personal property, must be filed in the district where the incident arose. And every new civil case needs the LACIV 109 addendum, which states the reason for the filing location; rule 2.3(a)(1)(E) requires a copy to be served with the summons and complaint. Our Los Angeles County court filing service can file in either building.

Family law in Torrance

A Lennox divorce, custody or support case goes to Torrance, not Inglewood. The court's directory lists the Torrance family law clerk's office at (213) 633-6363, open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The family law facilitator is on the 3rd floor in Room 310, and Family Court Services mediation is in Room 330 on the same floor.

The petition and summons are then served on the other spouse or parent wherever they live. If that person has moved from Lennox to another county, the case still stays in Torrance; only the service moves. Send every address you have, plus a photo if the person might avoid service.

Collections and probate leave the South Bay

Two case types travel farther. A limited civil collection case, the debt-on-credit kind defined in rule 3.740 of the California Rules of Court, routes from 90304 to the Norwalk Courthouse, about 16.5 miles east. Other limited civil cases go to the Central District at Stanley Mosk under rule 2.3(a)(2)(B).

Probate goes downtown as well. The local rules require probate, trust, guardianship and conservatorship filings in the Central District, with narrow exceptions for the North District. A Lennox estate's notices may still need to reach relatives in the neighborhood, so list each one.

Restraining orders in Lennox

For restraining orders from 90304, the locator names the Inglewood Courthouse, and the restraining order desk is in Room 202. The local rules also allow civil harassment and gun violence petitions to be filed where any party lives or wherever is needed for the requesting party's safety.

The restrained person has to be personally handed the temporary order, the petition and the notice of hearing, and the server can't be a party to the case. Send a recent photo, the person's car and plate if known, and the hours they're usually home or at work.

What helps at a Lennox address

Lennox is dense, and a small mistake in an address costs an attempt. Check these before submitting:

  • Unit numbers for apartments, and letters for a second dwelling on the lot.
  • The community name, Lennox or a neighboring city, as it appears on the lease or deed.
  • The person's schedule and any work address.
  • Gate codes or a manager's number for a secured building.

From January 1, 2027, three good-faith attempts at personal delivery, on three different days at three different times, show the reasonable diligence needed before papers may be left with another adult (CCP § 415.20(b)(2)). Our AB 747 guide explains the change, and our proof of service guide shows what you receive afterward. We make no guarantees for service.

Lennox process server questions

Not listed here? Call 855-582-5776 during business hours, Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.

Is Lennox part of Inglewood?

No. Lennox is a census designated place, and the Census Bureau's geocoder places its center point in Los Angeles County outside any incorporated city. It has no city government; the county governs it. Inglewood and Hawthorne both border it, and parts of each city share its ZIP Code, 90304.

Does the county's rent stabilization law cover a Lennox rental?

It can. The county's Department of Consumer and Business Affairs says its Rent Stabilization and Tenant Protections Ordinance limits rent increases on rent-stabilized units and requires a just cause to evict from covered residential units in unincorporated Los Angeles County. Check the property's status and coverage before serving a notice. General information, not legal advice.

Where is a Lennox eviction filed?

At the Inglewood Courthouse, 1 Regent Street. The court's Filing Court Locator lists Inglewood for limited unlawful detainers from Lennox, ZIP Code 90304, and the local rules make that a mandatory location. The civil clerk's office is on the 2nd floor, Room 202, open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on court days.

Why does the locator list two courthouses for a Lennox unlimited civil case?

For 90304, it lists both Inglewood and Torrance for unlimited civil without choosing between them. Both are in the court's Southwest District. Ask the Inglewood civil clerk which building fits your case type before filing, and state the filing reason on the LACIV 109 addendum, which is served with the summons.

Is a Lennox divorce filed in Inglewood?

No. The locator sends family law from 90304 to the Torrance Courthouse, 825 Maple Avenue, about 7 miles from Lennox in a straight line. The court's directory gives the Torrance family law clerk's line as (213) 633-6363, with the facilitator in Room 310 and Family Court Services mediation in Room 330.

How fast must a Lennox tenant answer an eviction?

Within 10 court days after personal service, by the Judicial Council's guide; weekends and court holidays don't count. Substituted service adds 10 calendar days before the court days begin. Tenants in unincorporated areas may also qualify for free lawyers through the county's Tenant Right to Counsel Program.

Who can serve a Lennox small claims case?

Any adult who isn't a party to the case, a sheriff or a process server. The person suing can't serve it. The papers have to reach the defendant at least 15 days before the hearing if they live in Los Angeles County, or 20 days if they live in another county.

How can I tell whether a 90304 property is in unincorporated Lennox?

The county's Department of Consumer and Business Affairs points people to the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk website and its District Map Look Up By Address. Enter the property address there. The Census geocoder will also show whether a point falls inside Lennox, Del Aire, Inglewood or Hawthorne.
